I need help diagnosing my Samsung hl-s5659W

Just got a tv from a friend. He bought it in 2008; it's a 2007 model. He said he has not used it for the past 2-3 years due to the issues it is having, which are minor from what he says.

When the tv turns on, it works fine; picture is clear and looks normal. Sound is good.

The problem is, when you press the power button on the front, it will click, and not turn on. It had not been on for a few years, and when we moved it, plugged it in, and hit the power button, it turned on fine. We turned it off and tried to turn it back on, and that's when the clicking began. We unplugged the power cord, plugged it back in, and the tv turned on again, with no clicking.

Is this the capacitors? Could it be something more major than just the capacitors, if the tv works fine once it actually gets past the clicking and turns on?

High probability it's capacitors in the power supply, but it's much easier to make an intelligent diagnosis if pictures are provided.

Do your home work first. There is tons of information on this problem all over the internet. There is a start up sequence. See if you can figure out at what point the sequence is interrupted.

Samsung TVs of that generation have a problem with two caps on the PSU going bad. It's a dead easy fix and will cost about £5.

I will do this when I get home. Thanks for the guidance. Anything particulr steps I should be looking for or sounds I should be listening for to take note of the steps?

Re: I need help diagnosing my Samsung hl-s5659W

Ok. here is what I have:

              - power cord is plugged into the tv, but not the wall

              - I plug the power cord into the wall

              - power button in bottom center of tv becomes lit up with red words "STAND BY/TEMP" and a click is heard

              - screen goes from black, to having a sort-of "glow" like it has turned on, just waiting to populate a picture

              - power button now goes from the red "STAND BY/TEMP" to green "LED" and is blinking

              - after about 3 seconds the Samsung "ding" is heard for about 1/2 a second and cuts off before the sound is finished, it looses the "glow," goes back to black, and clicks (not sure how to describe the Samsung ding sound, but it's that familiar noise that Samsung TVs make when turned on)

              - power button just blinks with the red "STANDBY/TEMP" for about 6 seconds, and tv clicks; this cycle happens continuously; no more green "LED" and no more Samsung noise, or tv glow; just red blinking and clicks

If you are looking at the tv from the front, the click is coming from the back, bottom, right side

As I said before, the tv had not been turned on for about a year, and the first time we tried after that time, it turned on, but now it just goes through the steps above.

I tried to be as descriptive as I could with what was happening. Maybe I could take a video and post it, if that might help better?

The symptoms sound a lot like a bad power supply. You'll need to disassemble your TV and take pictures of the boards (specifically the power supply board, which is usually a yellow/beige colour and has the power connector near it.)

                  How tough is this?

Anywhere on this site where I can find a how to for this?

I'm failry proficient in connectivity and what not, and have done extensive car AV work, but never with TVs. Just want to make sure I'm not doing anything unnecessary.

Re: I need help diagnosing my Samsung hl-s5659W

Taking the tv apart (just removing the back cover) is probably 20+ screws and some plastic tabs that are hard to guess how to undo until youve broken some, but all in all easy to get apart and requires little more then a flat head and philips screwdriver. Placing the TV on a clean perfectly flat large table face down before unscrewing the back is a good way to avoid a lot of problems. Taking pictures is obviously easy too though often screwed up.

Replacing 2 capacitors requires a soldering iron, and not being a total klutz or moron. Would take around 1 hour tops if you were totally new to doing it. If you had trouble figuring out how to get the back cover off the TV the soldering might be too hard for you.

You can find guides for soldering / replacing caps / choosing the right caps (very important) on this site and others / youtube videos of how to solder, and so on.
Fixed so far 12 lcd's , 1 plasmas, 5 monitors, 0 dlp's (plan to keep the dlps at 0). and 3 atx power supplies, and 2 motherboards.

for a comprehensive idea of what is wrong with my tv. It would not let me edit my original post to add the pictures.

The first picture is of the whole back of the tv. Do I need to remove the top back panel as well, or is everything I need in this lower section?

The second picture is from the side. Is this the power board?

The third is a close up of the second.

The clicking is definately coming from the part in the 2nd and 3rd picture.

Don't post pictures inline. It seriously inconveniences retiredcaps and annoys others. ALWAYS use 'Manage Attachments' - below the text entry area.

While it wouldn't allow you to edit the original post, there was nothing to prevent you from adding a second post to the same thread.

Ask the moderator to merge the threads, or move your post from the other thread to this one.

One thing is certain - I will not jump between two threads to help fix a problem.

Probably would be easiest for you to repost your pictures in the original thread, but make sure you post your pictures using manage attachements (the button to manage attachements is bellow the submit reply button in a section called additional options, it opens a small windows where you upload attachements.) You can add pictures to any new post, doesnt have to be your first post when you started the thread., make sure you dont use the quick reply box at the bottom of this page, but instead click post reply bellow the last message.

In regards to your actual question, no one in the original forum thought you had a DLP tv, because DLP are generally crap so they mostly stoped selling them by 2008 or so and most have bit the dust already. You probably still do have a power supply issue, but i have no experience with DLP's so cant say for sure, The power supply is the part you took 2 pictures of (beige ish board with 2 big round black capacitors thats located on the left when looking at the back of the tv, and is kinda sideways to most of the other boards). Look closely, and post much better lit pictures of that beige board. Your lookign for leaky / buldged capacitors. Normally they are perfect cylinders, when they go bad they have some crud leaked at top or bottom, or they start buldging out and look more like a coke can that has been frozen. All the capacitors big and small should be checked, the largest ones are usually not the culprit.

Edit: Upon rereading your original post, and taking into consideration that i now know its a DLP, are you saying it physically displays on the screen "standby/temp" , or that there is a LED that is marked as the "standby/temp" LED. Because if the screen is turning on to the point where it can display a status on the screen, then id say your TV has a bad sensor / (maybe DLP's have a temperature sensor???) , and it is turning off cause it doesnt want to overheat. But Plain Bill is like a master of DLP, so you should probably suck it up and repost pictures on the orginal thread, so that he puts his 2 cents in.

It is in fact a DLP. I was given the tv from it's original owner. It started giving him trouble about a year and a half after he bought it, and instead of trying to fi it, he just went and bought a new tv, while this one sat in his garage not in use for a few years. I would like to try and fix it, if it is a small fix.

The tv turned on one time,a nd the picture was fine, so that is promising.

There is a power button in the center bottom of the outer bezel, underneat the tv screen that lights up green or red and displays "temp" or "led." The screen does have somewhat of a glow to it, while it is clicking over trying to turn on. It is hard to explain the glow. I can take a video of it and try to post that tonight.

I have some video. Not sure if it will provide any more info to help figure out what is wrong with the tv. Not sure if it's frowned upon to embed videos, so I will just post the links:

                                  http://vimeo.com/33837514

First video shows the power button on the front, and the clicking noise coming from the power board. The tv is plugged into the wall, and I am not pressing anything. It keeps trying to turn on, but can't for some reason.

                                  http://vimeo.com/33837665

Second is a close up of the power board. You can hear the clicking here as well.

                                  http://vimeo.com/33838088

Third video is the screen, right after I plug the power cord into the back of the tv. You can see the screen "light up" sort of. And you can also hear the Samsung noise that you ehar when the tvs turn on. It is not the full noise, but jsut a .5 second of it.
