Canon scam: is there a useful hack to scan WITHOUT ink ? (Pixma MG 2550s)

    title says it all

    I've a Pixma mg2550s printer/scanner All In One

when I try to scan but there's no ink cartridge it gives an "error code 2,140,21"

scanning requires no ink so it's obvious this is a scam basically an artificial block they put in place for $ reasons

so how do I bypass this? is there a hack? maybe a fixed firmware

nb. got this new Pixma at a bargain price but I defo wont be buying another Canon product if there's no fix for this "feature"

Reset the ink detection, the scanner will work .
To reset , press and hold “Stop” for 5 seconds. The Alarm should clear and the printer will allow you to scan once again.

the button with the red circle & triangle? tried that it doesnt work the orange blinking light still keeps blinking

nb. it's not just that the printer's without ink but it's also without ink cartridges (the 2 slots are empty) I reckon your method maybe works when there's already cartridges in the printer

Yes . that button , the button with the red circle & triangle..And another yes to your logic , the Canon has to detect the cartridges , unfortunately ..

so is there a workaround? a part of the firmware that could be changed or something

when the old cartridges went bad I threw them away and I dont want to buy new ones just to scan (and the closest commerce that sells this sh aint even close)

First of all my friend , lesson taught : never throw something unless proven useless ..And yes , there are many workouts , like writing a software or reverse engineering , etc ..But I think is pointless due to time waste and costs ..

lesson learnt but for this 1st round it's too late :/

anyway I reckon it must be just one line of code in the firmware which essentially says "if printer not ready then scanner cant run"

so in theory someone firmware-savvy should be able to find & delete this sh right?

for starters how to I "extract" the firmware? (assuming it's possible for these printers which is a standard usb printer btw)

but then he presses "power" again & the printer is supposed to try print? my printer just goes off

I also tried doing the first step but by pressing "stop" either 4x or 5x

whatever that's supposed to do they probably changed it for the mg2550s

In theory , everything is simple , but that's not the case here ..Anyway , i'll send to you a link for starters , if i may say so , in private messages ..

thanx I got it but if I understand correctly I need to open & physically manipulate the printer just to extract or flash the firmware ? +_- that's the first time I hear of this cause for other devices like mainboards GPUs & routers we dont need to do that

Yes my friend ..This is the hard way . The easy way is to search for someone who took the load and wasted his time doing it , then give it to you for free ..Many years ago , this was the reason to find Badcaps . I'm a ultra multitasking man , which leave me little time , so any good help was appreciated .

but even if I could get the firmware file somewhere I'd still have to open the device to flash it right?

Not necessarily , it depend on devices . It might be similar to a firmware update, and done through USB , or it might be you have to remove the firmware chipset , etc ..Even elevators are programmed .

but if it's possible to flash a firmware to a device without opening it then isnt it automatically possible to also extract that firmware from a device without opening it? figures it goes both ways

at any rate I'll try find the firmware for my printer

                                Could be , couldn't be ..I have to open a Cannon (Pixma MG 2550s) , which I won't do .. But I'll help answering questions however I can ..
Look , a friend of mine's primary job is to repair and flash Elevators bios , so if you expand in this domain , it's good for you on many levels .

to actually work on firmware I'd have to learn assembly language right? I've done "high level" languages in the past like C but assembly is supposed to be a lot harder to learn

anyway I found this thread https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=92191

not sure what everything means but I downloaded service tool + the eeprom dump (that's the same as bios/firmware dump right?)

so this suggests it's possible to flash a bios without opening the device???

now I just need to know what to modify in the bios file and it's exactly 1kb (1024 bytes) so it's cant be that hard for one of the experts to find right? :/

nb. I download this bios: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/attach...3&d=1613423701

Yes , you need to learn a form of C , and yes , it's very difficult to start from scratch ..That Reminded me when I learnt the C++ , then R language for Statistics and Probabilities , and after that Java and PHP . In reality , and trust me , once you start , the sky has no limits . There's a beginning but there's no end .

For experts , yes , but it would take quite a longtime to write the intended target from the firmware , specially if it wasn't done or commonly needed like in Laptops case e.g.

In your case , I'm sure no one wrote that , at least for online purposes , so you're on your own basically ..

but in this case aint it just a matter of altering a couple of bytes in this file? if so it's frustrating cause I can see the entire file on notepad cause it's so tiny yet I dont know what to edit :/

(btw I didnt expect the firmware to be contained in only 1024 bytes that dont seem much room to program something like a printer)
