80 Plus Gold, efficient psu's design changes.

    http://it.anandtech.com/show/3655/se...xseries-750w/1
    Mainly pages 4 and 5.

I was reading this anandtech article and it dived straight into Resonant Topology which is a bit over my head. I'm impressed by the clean design, and since at those efficiencies it makes an older 80 plus PSU look power hungry. I just wonder if it will have the same extreme longevity and reliability of the current corsair psu's.

Seasonic X series is an extremely good design. I would fully expect them to last as long as a zippy or delta, especially with all those solid caps.

    http://www.80plus.org/manu/psu/psu_join.aspx

There's a list of all the 80plus certified psu's and their rating. Good lie detector for companies who claim 80plus certification too.

i was always wondering if it's possible to modify an old(-ish) PSU to be more efficient somehow..

say.. a 300W Fortron or Delta.. they cost next to nothing..
modifying those somehow to have a higher efficiency than the standard eff. in the lower 70% range..

would be kinda cool.. you could re-use them for not-so-powerhungry computers without spending 50 bucks or more on a new 400+W 80+ PSU
(the only below-400W units with 80+ i know of are the seasonic 330 & 380W units.. which are pretty expensive.. most of the time they cost the same as a good 400+W PSU with 80+)

would be a cool project.. you learn something and as a bonus you'd get a more efficient & cooler running PSU..

Fortron is grabage, I eventually learned not to use them. I had few blow up and in generic TVs go overvoltage slightly and damage SMD components (few). One had damaged MLCC SMD ceramic capacitor on the mainboard across 12V feeding one of two 8V regulator.

        Cheers, Wizard

What about 80 Plus Platinum? More efficient than Gold, but highly unlikely to be implemented, even with synchronous AC rectifiers at the input.
Too bad the standard does not cover quality!
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

You might get Platinum by recovering the heat off the power supply and running a small sterling engine

It's temping to pull 220v for computers for that 3% difference.

I think that should be called 90 PLUS to give people more of an incentive to buy it, and the fact that it's always over 90% efficiency.
