    HP ZV5000 laptop AC adapter

Hello all, I am having some issues with an HP Pavilion ZV5000 power adapter. I received the computer with a bad power jack on the motherboard. After replacing it, the computer ran fine for days on AC power. It still runs fine on the battery, but there is an issue with the AC adapter. When I plug the laptop in, the external power LED lights up for 3 seconds and then shuts off. It seems to be the same duration every time. The voltage tests good with a multimeter when the power cord is not plugged into the laptop, and it will provide steady voltage for as long as I care to hole the probes to it.

My question, and I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable or experienced in this area than I can help, is should I be looking to the AC adapter or the laptop itself? I really don't want to tear the laptop down again if I don't have to. I don't think the solder joints on the new jack on the motherboard are bad because I see no change by holding the tip of the plug in different positions, which should put pressure on the bad joint and cause it to make contact. I have opened the AC adapter and replaced the caps on the output; they weren't vented but they were from a suspect run of Nichicons. Other than that nothing is visibly burnt.

    Any advice is appreciated!

Does it run on the adapter only with no battery installed?

As embarrassing as this is, I was just mis-reading the LED indicators and everything is fine. Thanks to your suggestion Toasty I ran the laptop without the battery pack and realized that the LED was still not illuminated. A quick look at the manual showed that the LED only lights when the battery is actively charging, and then goes out when the battery reaches a full charge. I guess I am just used to laptops where the LED is always lit on AC power.

Chalk one up to RTFM I guess Thank you for the advice!

Happens to the best of us!

Run it on battery only then make sure it is charging.
