Antec Basiq BP350P, 87.5% efficiency at 25% load?

So they say in this review.

That's a weird efficiency curve . Maybe some typo or error? Do you think that cheapie PSU can really be 87.5% efficient at 25% load (~88W)?

(Can't find pics of the guts, only this video).

No way, that's an old FSP design with minimum load resistors so the lower output, the crappier efficiency. The efficiency is high overall, I would guess 70-75 % for this thing, but may be, why not.

Some designs can be more efficient at low load.

When at low load, the forward drop of the output schottkies is lower, transformer losses are lower, wiring losses are lower.

When at higher load, the power supply runs warmer, which can make the forward drop of the output schottkies lower too. However, on-resistance of the main switching transistor(s) increase, which can lower efficiency.

In other words -- you can't say without doing lots of complicated equations and it's probably very variable with temperature, line voltage and even individual models.

I know i'm on 120VAC but i have that thing and the efficiency blows ass. At even 220W load the efficiency is at 68% it probably averages 66%

So the 220W supply is wasting 70W??? Wow. It won't last long like that.

That's the reason why the old Fortrons were built like tanks, don't ya think? There were not many reviews but from the few informations I gathered, it seems true their efficiency was nothing spectacular.

Definitely not powering a Prescott P4 and an overclocked 8800GT that thing is headed for an early death especially with Teapo caps

You haven't recapped it? Shame on you. Anyway, the older ones usually hold quite well even with Teapos, but if you have some newer design (such as this Antec), they will most likely die. Usually +5 V SB caps bulge first.

I got it brand new for free so i let it be, i'll recap it later for sure
