    Noisy Compaq Proliant PSU

As the thread title suggests, my Compaq Proliant server has an extremely noisy PSU. I've tried running the server with the cover off and disconnecting all the interior fans (not recommended to leave running in that condition), and none of them is as noisy as the PSU fan itself.

In addition, the PSU fan sometimes creates an annoying wavering/beating sound, like when you have two sound waves with a very slight pitch difference between them. Even though I've located the server downstairs, as far from the bedrooms as possible, I can still hear this noise in my bedroom!

As you might expect, this is very annoying. I'd like to ask if anyone here has had experience with these kind of PSUs, and would perhaps know what the problem is. I've taken out the PSU and had a look at it, and there are rivets and screws all over the place. I'd like to open it up and replace/repair the fan - perhaps a drop of oil on the bearings would help - but cannot figure out which screws to undo.

Has anyone here ever successfully opened up one of these PSUs? If so, maybe you could walk me through opening it up to replace/repair the fan. Might also be a good opportunity to check for bad caps

    Re: Noisy Compaq Proliant PSU

I think I have an idea on how to deassemble it (Link to post itself)

I have also had the pleasure of swapping the fan out, because one of the fans in the 2 redundant powersupplies was failing...
Also take note that if your Proliant server also has room for another redundant PSU but it is not installed the fan in the installed powersupply will run at 100% all the time, never throttling down...

the nidec ta450 fans in the proliant units are reaching end of life.been seeing them dropping like flies.
a place called xoxide has replacements.these fans sound like cement mixers when they die.you get about 3 days warning before they seize up and the server shuts down.just went onsite to a machine shop we service on a fan death in one of these.
might as well recap and most important resolder the transformers!the smps transformers on all the units i have serviced were busted loose and just barely making contact.these psu were littered with bad solder joints everywhere.found lots of bad caps too.even good brands.10 years of 24/7 takes its toll.

I bought my fan from the seller chnpa on eBay. He was a great seller, my original order was for only memory and a CPU for that order but I asked him and he had the fan to, I got it for 4$...

        It is a:
        Nidec BETAV
        TA450DC
