thinkpad t460 - only charges when battery reinserted

    hello, the following problem:

the thinkpad would charge after reinserting the battery after charger is plugged. however, also when the adapter is installed and the battery is removed and reinserted. charging occurs adaptive (no steady 12 v on pl101/pr110).

i have checked all mosfets (they appear to be fine), all resistors, diodes and fuses on the circuit lines as well as replaced the charger ic twice as well as pq101 and pq102. i have also tried two original batteries (the device came with external battery only) and power supplies (65 and 90 w, which are also correctly recognised in the adapter sense circuit and lenovo vantage - right battery percentage is shown there, too) and a different charging socket. the problem persists.

when the battery is removed in windows, the notebook locks up because the charge level is too low (after reinserting the battery everythinf works fine though)... bios and me are up to date. the notebook runs on battery or power supply without any problems.

BAT_FET_HOT is pulled down, so it's ok.
-EXTPWR is working fine (pulled down when charger is plugged)

here are the measurements for bat ic voltages (second column: bat is charging):

    1 20,5 20,45
    2 20,5 20,45
    3 20,26 20,04
    4 26,23 26,14
    5 3,26 3,27
    6 2,77 2,76
    7 0,051 0,127
    8 0,008 0,016
    9 0,1 0,1
    10 0,97 0,97
    11 3,3 3,3
    12 3,3 3,3
    13 0 0
    14 0,02 (floating) 0,02 (floating)
    15 0 0
    16 3,3 3,3
    17 10,81 11,06
    18 10,03 11,06
    19 10,81 11,05
    20 10,81 11,05
    21 1,18 1,18
    22 0 0
    23 0 1,93
    24 6,04 6,04
    25 10,55 16,9
    26 10,73 14,18
    27 10,81 11,09
    28 20,24 20,13

no shorts found. could it be a thinkengine issue?

    i'm totally confused... schematics attached

Measure the voltage to ground of:

    I2C_CLK_BT0
    I2C_DATA_BT0

    on the battery connector.

      on the battery connector.
both 3.3 v, checked that lines, too (resistors are fine on both sides - battery connector and mec side).

      same for

      I2C_CLK_BT1
      I2C_DATA_BT1
      S_TEMP
is 3.3 V without bat, with bat plugged it is pulled down to 2.05 v

It should be 0v and not 2.05v when battery is connected.

okay, thats good to know... so the thinkengine should pull it down to 0 v internally, right?

okay solved the problem. decoupled the 1 k resistor R453 for MAIN internal bat from MEC. the laptop came with ext. battery only, now it's working fine... just lol. external battery is charging fine now with 12v charger voltage. thanks guys

and i'm not sure if you are right, never saw 0 v on this line with other working devices, but thanks for the information. have a great day

It depends on the platform. On some boards, it indeed goes to zero but on many other boards it just get pulled down by 1V-2V. So ,i too dont think that was the problem here though@udemzy has suggested his insights and every suggestion should be considered.
