Acer AN515-54 won't power on, charger light comes on

hi I have the above acer laptop.

I have the schematic and board view files.

but I can figure this out,

when I connect the charger it shows charging on the charge light,

but PL301 gets red hot within a few seconds so I cut the power.

and I think its shorted to ground,

can anyone help me solve this issue ?

    thanks

ok after disconnecting the battery PL301 no longer heats up.

im getting voltage on the following components

    PUZ2 PUZ3 PUZ4 PUZ5 PQB11 PQB12 all reading 19v

    anyone able to help ?

ive now discovered that PU301 is getting extremely hot but then going cold so it must be turning off ???

You neither shared the boardnumber nor measurements to confirm a short to GND somewhere. How do you think anyone can help you out then (with literally no informations shared).

At least your main power rail seems fine. In the meantime I'll try to find out what is PU301 and what is controlled by it.

Check resistance to GND of +3VL and +3VALW

Hi sorry I forgot to add that info.

I will test what you have said and post back my findings.

              hi again

              the +3VALW is 0 ohm
              the +3VL is 0 ohm

              board number is LA-H501P

You will need a dc supply to proceed further as voltage needs to be injected on +3VL line to findout what is shorted. Very likely a shorted KBC and/or shorted PCH part of SOC. The voltage injection should'nt exceed 1V.

ok where would I tap it on to ?

ive never done voltage injection before (sorry)

hi guys sorry for my very late reply I had to wait on my DC power supply to arrive and it took longer than planned

how much voltage should I inject and amps ?

Personally use 0v8 (0.8 volts) with our 30A 'short killer' device. Has worked well to date.

Recommend that you start @ 0v8 on the voltage and consider 2-3A on the current.

Red probe on the +3VL line. Black to ground. Your power supply should display that a large amount of current is being consumed by the short on the logic board. Respectively, some part should be heating up during this procedure. Hope that it is not the PCH / CPU which is a complex BGA device to replace.

You can pour IPA (alcohol from Costco; pharmacy grade is great for the job) over the group of parts you suspect to be shorted. Even better if you have a thermal camera.

The IPA will mist away if it is the heated component. Often, caps are causing the short internally and they must be removed / replaced.

hi again ive found the part that is heating up

its an ic PU301 could it be heating because if bad capacitors ??

Yes, it could be or another part - as per post #8.

Keep the voltage under 1 volt to be safe.

Then apply onto this line that is shorted with 0 ohms.

Who is heating up under this setup of voltage injection ?

thanks its odd that the CPU would die randomly like it has the only thing I had to do was drill out a screw that held the case on and then it was dead.

but thank you for all the help so far.
