    Lenovo L580 not posting

    Hi , I have a lenovo l580, which won't fully post.

When the power button is pressed, the laptop begins to boot, but stops short of screen coming on , (without beeps).

Then keyboard caps lock light illuminates but won't toggle on/off

Fan spins up and down, and after a minute or 2 revs up and won't rev down again

    and that's all...
    nothing on HDMI

Tried disconnecting laptop's keyboard and using external usb type, but the keyboard shows no life and has no influence on the laptop.

When ram is removed the laptop will beep correctly to identify missing ram.
Tried known working RAM but the problem persists.

No shorts on the supply coils, but the 2nd usb type c socket is not working i.e. charging adaptor has no effect. ( works on my other l580).

Stuck a usb stick with ububtu on it, the stick remains inactive.

I have a second working laptop and to date have found no voltage anomoly?

I,m trying to follow the power on sequence in the schematic attached but having difficulty grasping the concept, if you know what i mean.

Any help /guidance would be greatly appreciated.

did you try to reflash a working bios? does the cpu power up? core rails present? so you have a usb c meter for checking how many amps the machine is drawing?

        Thanks for replies
Rediii, In terms of bios, I haven't attempted a re-flash, until I'm satisfied no hardware fault exists, but is certainly an option thanks. I have no means of determining amps drawn unfortunately,

i get 9.1v at the CPU Mosfets The cpu gets warm. core voltages

        PL403 - No volts
        PL406 - 2.7
        PL411 - 2.8
        PL408 - 1.4
        PL610 - 2.6

mcpisig123, I'm unfamiliar with DRAMRST, but i'm here to learn.

DRAMRST#- you can measure on ram slot pin#30(Assuming DDR3 ram module is being used)

Thanks, I have DDR4?, would i be looking for a certain voltage?

              Re: Lenovo L580 not posting

Check Ramslot pin108 for DRAMRST# for DDR4. It should be 1.2V

Thanks, first time probing ram, is there a safe way to check without shorting to pins either side?

                  Re: Lenovo L580 not posting

dramrst is present on DRAM Socket pin 108 at 1.23v.

                  I'm assuming that's good..

                      Hi,

                      maybe these value will help.

                      PL201 +3VLX
                      PL202 +5VLX
                      PL403 +VCC_GT
                      PL406 +VCC_Core
                      PL411 +VCC_Core
                      PL408 +VCC_SA
                      PL610 +1VALWP
                      PL301 +1.2VP
                      U0901.8 +3V_SPI
                      U4502.8 VCC_3LD0_PD_SPI

I have a L480 with no Post, only Power LED/Thinkpad Dot flashing (3 Times) and i try to diagnose this board.

This board has no +3V_SPI on Bios Chip ... (25Q128JVSIQ_SO8)

I will check PL201 (open PJ201/PF202) if there is some short to ground

Hello Juergenb, In terms of next step, I'm open to all suggestions, and intend to check the thinkpad dot as soon as i connect the board up to the ThinkPad display.
Out of curiosity, does the keyboard caps lock freeze on your l480?

Are you sure about these measurements?? How can a 1ALWP coil read 2.6V?? Measure all coil voltages again. If you have not flashed bios, flash it with known good clean me bios.

                                  Re: Lenovo L580 not posting

Checked the ThinkPad status light and that's solid red.

Big discrepancy in the voltage measurements compared to Juergenb's chart and highlighted by mcplsig123.

                                  Re - measured voltages are:-

                                  PL403 - No volts
                                  PL406 - 1.2
                                  PL411 - 1.2
                                  PL408 - 0.74
                                  PL610 - 1.1

Unsure of initial readings cause, but assume my voltmeter needs replacing since all readings were consistently wrong.

                                  SMDFlea - Tamper switch reading (sw open) 2.75v pch / 0v s3

With regards Bios flash - can I/we assume CPU and memory are Good at this point?

You can but the me region of the bios has to be cleaned before flashing it on another pc.
