Dell Latitude E5450 doesn't detect any HDD

Hi, I have a problem where the board refuses to see ANY Hdd via the Hdd adapter cable (which is 100% good on other boards). The board boots USB sticks no problem, but when a (known-good) HDD is connected, the Dell logo stays up for a long time and it eventually baulks with "no boot devices found". No combination of bios settings makes any difference (it has the latest version)

The schematic shows pin 13 of JSATA1 connects to HDD_DET (presumably that is HDD detect?) which connects to pin U1 of @UC1E. My experience of interpreting schematics is limited - can someone confirm what @UC1E is?? I can't find anything like that on the board itself.

Any advice on how to proceed would be welcomed.

    Thanks chaps

First 7 pins of JSATA1 are data, the others are for power. HDD_DET# is an output from the drive and should be ground. Check for power rails to the connector and see if the drive spins up. If the drive doesn't go ready, it won't be detected by the host.

Hi, I should have mentioned that all drives spin up ok, so it looks like a data problem. Where to go next? Thanks

First, is the drive detected by the BIOS and just won't boot from it? Or is the drive not detected at all?

Hi, no the drive is not seen by the bios. Same with any drive - no matter how they boot (UEFI/Legacy boot).

They spin up, but are not detected. I've eliminated the HDD connector and the drive(s) as all work fine on other boards.
          Thanks

UEFI/Legacy is irrelevant if the drive isn't seen in BIOS. If the supplies to the connector measure fine (+3.3V/+5V etc), then I'd be paying attention to the TX/RX data pairs. These connect via capacitors CN17~19 to UN2 (SATA Repeater). Buzz out the connections from the connector to the caps, from the caps to UN2. Also check that UN2 has power etc. Then use a scope to see what data activity you have. My assumption is that you will only see data activity initially from the host on one data pair on boot up, which is then expecting a response from the drive from the other data pair.

That's extremely helpful, thanks - I'll check these and report back.

ok, I found the 4 caps which connect to the TX/RX lines - all beep with the corresponding pins on JSATA1 and all the caps are good.
The chip at UN2 has correct voltage and isn't short (only 1 ground pin). I even swapped it out with the same chip from an old board, but it's still refusing to detect any drive. I don't have an oscilloscope to see what's going on with the data lines, but everything on the face of it appears to be normal

Any evidence of bios being tampered (signs that the chip has been removed)? Intel ME region has a part called flex io configuration and the ports can be reconfigured in there.

Yes, I was starting to think it could be ME-related. I'll reconfigure it with fitc and see if comes alive again. I know poorly configured ME sections can stop network/SD cards etc from being detected, so will report back, thanks.

Well, it's not the bios, sadly. Swapped it out with a known good, cleaned ME version but still no dice. Was trying to find the flex io section in fitc - can you point me to where it is?
I guess the next stage will get to measure the data i/o with an oscilloscope - this is something I have not done before, not owning a scope. Will do some research.
                      Thanks.

Seems that in fitc 10 the sata configuration was under PCH strap#14, the clean ME configuration is probably right. The flex io came in fitc 11. I have had the same problem with LA-901P, did not solve it then. (changed UN2 also).

Try removing The UN2 sata repeater and then jumper between PIN 1-15/2-14/4-12 & 5-11
.See if the HDD is detected.

                              Greetings ro all,

Does anyone found a solution. I have the same problem and everything seems alright
