Lenovo Yoga 920-13IKB Not Detecting SSD

    Brand Model Lenovo yoga 920-13ikb
    Problem SSD is not recognised
    SSD type m.2 2280

Tried 3 different models which work on other systems. Tried NVMe just in case, same result. Bios Says not detected.

    History of laptop:
Original problem not turning on and another technician removed Thunderbolt bolt controller JHL6540 S LLSN and left at that. Customer replaced power button/daughter board with USB thinking this was also having issues and ive noticed the actual connector pins were loose on Motherboard side which I've also fixed. Originally I can start laptop off the battery only if I manually charger battery for a while, internal 2 Type-C ports didn't deliver power or work at all and no Voltage negotiation.

I've noticed the reason why they've removed JHL6540 S LLSN iis because it's shorted. I've replaced with a new part, it works.

I've replaced the CYPD4226 G4: Two-Port Type-C Controller with Power Delivery controller, now both type C port works for charging Data and external screens and charges battery.

Then when SSD was installed I heard a whining sound coming around the MOSFETs near BQ charge Controllers, I've replaced all 3 PQ9, PQ11, PQ12 MOSFETS, whining sound went away and back to good original condition but not SSD detected.

I've attached schematics and I'd like to know what I need to check for the SSD detection to work. I've checked the SSD power rail +3VDX_SSD and it's good and stable. PU6 chip responsible for the +3VDX_SSD creation is also good.

My only thoughts are if the thunderbolt controller died which connects to pch/CPU I'm assuming may have done a damage but I can't be sure. I can boot the system into windows 10 setup, get into bios, run Ubuntu Live version 20 in UEFi no issues including touch pad, LCD touch, LCD WiFi as well no problems.

Any direction you can recommend I can try?

    Hi.

    1) are you 100% sure that your m.2 SSD being tested is PCIe NVMe model and not the m.2 SATA version? Only the PCIe version will work inside this laptop.

Guessing the whining noise was due to an improper choice of SSD being docked inside the common footprint socket. Same socket but electrically different between the models.

Post the details of your SSD.

    2) assuming you have the PCIe version, check that all the series 0.22uf caps are present as shown on page 21 of the schematics (C231..C238). Each is required.

I will attempt different models of SSD and post results shortly.

      Thanks for your reply.

Sorry to have wasted your time. Correct, the one pictured below just worked.

This used to annoy us to no end on Asus laptops... Same model different termination, one took NVMe only, one took SATA only. Very bad time when you had to ship a laptop with a m.2 SSD upgrade and you realize you ordered the wrong kind after it arrives and you plug it in and it doesn't work.

Yes this SSD naming convention is not very clear and super annoying. If it isn't compatible, it physically shouldn't fit in. Not only this but even installation can be difficult for example, this Lenovo you can't use NVMe SSD that's double sided, it doesn't fit in nicely, the SSD socket isn't high enough to accommodate double sided chips.

Ah, things manufacturers will do so that their boards are close enough to standards to pass agencie approval, but still quirky enough that the only replacement parts that can still be serviced by your average IT guy stay expensive...
