[DOUBT] Let's talk about laptop a CPU(soldered) upgrade

    Hello people,
Yes, it's. The guy who wants to do a cpu upgrade.
After walk kilometers and kilometers, trying to find a technical service to do a desoldering (i7-8750H) of the cpu of my laptop to replace it for other something better (i9-9980HK), finally, i have found a place to do this operation.
When i reached the place, he asked me the questions of always. "Is the cpu soldered?" Yes, "Do you have the micro code?" Yes, "Stencil?" Yes, "Do you know if the BIOS and the EC are compatible" in this one he catched me, i answered "i don't know", and that why i'm here. What do i need to know what kind of things i need to do for successful upgrade of my cpu? some one can help me?

first of all id not recommend doing this at all. but since ur at it. u need to know ur intel chipset on the board, and if that intel chipset is compatible with the CPU.

second of all. ur bios / ec wont probably alow u to do this. unles u have some sort of unlocked bios. mayby someone else can answer u this. but ul probably hear dont do it.
even if the soldering is succesfull. the cpu u baught itself might be dead.

    short answer. dont do it.

@upgrader001, I've wrote a thread for this very issue which menshawy has linked. Just take backup of your bios chip with an external spi programmer and save the dump. Open this bios with microcode utility attached in that thread and check which microcode are listed in your bios. Then proceed to cpuworld website and check microcode/architecture of the target cpu. If it has same microcode, then and only then replacement will work. Else, you will end up with a dead unit.

I';; strongly suggest not to go for this as SOC replacement is not a kids job and require very skillfull hands and tools.

What make and model number is the laptop. Whats the motherboard part number, and revision if any. Is there a higher SKU with the i9-9980HK .The HK versions are unlocked aren`t they ? ,and if there is a higher SKU then maybe the ME Management Engine firmware in the bios is different.Thats where amongst other things the voltages are set for the PCH .

Yes this model with the i9-9980HK, this one with i7-9750H, this one very similar

The HK versions are unlocked aren`t they ?
                Yes they are unlocked.

IN theory it works as the bios has microcode for target cpu but in practcally results are mixed. Btw, if you add microde to ant bios then theritically any cpu will work but alas it doesnt always work. So there is element of high risk.

Possible, yes. Likely to work, yes. Expensive failure, very. I've done this a few times but it was on boards with already dead CPUs, usually 4th gen and 5th gen U series and dual core Celerons upgraded to quad core Pentiums on the common Asus X453/X553 cheapies.
