Older surface pro 1 (model 1514). Original problem was the screen had a yellow band down the right side (seems to be a noted issue). Anyway, the unit functioned ok BUT one day it would not boot up (tried different force startup sequences). The battery had drained from non-usage. Recharging didn't help. Looking at the screen with a flashlight, I could see a surface logo at start up. Plugging in a second display / tv got something but nothing useful as no keyboard function or touch screen. Eventually even the second display "function" no longer happened. I replaced the lcd screen (ltl06hl01). As expected, it functioned at first start up... success. Hold on... not quite. Decided to factory reset everything and start a fresh machine. Worked fine for a while (few months, light use) but again after some long non-use, battery level died and again the display was gone and only second display worked fine (after recharging). Removed the lcd and reseated all connectors, display was back. OK. Maybe poor workmanship on previous effort. :-( Left the display "unglued". Used the device for the day but let the battery go to zero to test the scenario and the system shut down from no power... somewhat expected.
Recharged the battery overnight back to full charge (light on charge tip goes out at fullly charged on this model / charger). Still nothing. Further, the second display is strange as it doesn't give the "normal" welcome screen to the user and when the desktop eventually comes up, the task bar has limited icons on it and neither the key board or touch of the screen works (touch screen worked before even though there was no visible display)... almost like the original old lcd screen. Playing with the connectors, I found that removing the connector / cable at CON108 allows the device to power up / start up in a somewhat normal fashion (ie. welcome screen, etc) and keyboard and touch screen works with the second display BUT still no visible display on the lcd. No amount of reseating will bring back the primary lcd display.
I guess my questions are many... :-) what's in the cable / connector signal wise or function wise? Anything that I can readily check with a meter? Is the lcd panel "broke" now... not sure why loss of power would break it?
what else can I try to bring back the display?
Attached is a picture of the area of the MB in question (ie. CON108).
Any help or hints on this would be much appreciated. Thanks
