    MSI GT780DXR (MS-1761) Cuts out on Graphics Load

    I have stress tested this system using Prime 95 for 24 hours and there are no issues, it's stable. However, if I add any graphical load from furmark, userbenchmark.com or Kombustor, the system, often immediately, cuts out. Sometimes it won't POST and the fans regularly pulse and the speed seems to increase each time until it reaches the maximum. Sometimes the fans don't come on at all, it won't POST, and in this case, I have to remove the battery. Sometimes, it just happily restarts.

    I have tried the following:
    - Cleaning fans, reapplying thermal paste and have monitored the temps. It's not a thermal issue.
    - New Power adapter - same isssue
    - Running on battery only - can't replicate the issue, and Graphics stress tests run OK. Probably because the system doesn't fully load the GPU on battery.
    - Installed the latest Nvidia drivers

    I'm wondering whether this is likely to be an issue with the graphics card, this is in a removable MXM format, or it's a power issue under heavy load?

    Any Ideas?

    discrete vga fail very often expecially if there is some extra dust or notebook is used over soft places.

      what is the maximum temperature on GPU and CPU under that load?

        CPU is at 40°C when booting into Windows. It goes up to a max of 75°C under Prime95 blend. The GPU doesn't get past 40°C using Furmark 1080p Bench before crashing, but it doesn't even get chance to ramp up to full load. The maximum I have recorded the GPU is 57°C. I tried it with the battery, but unfortunately it cut out, and it won't boot up again.

        When trying to power on now, I hear a short, sharp 'clicking' sound, the fans don't start and nothing else appears to power up. I'm pretty certain that the sound isn't mechanical, there is no mechanical disk installed and I unplugged the fan temporarily, and the sound remained. After trying to power on around 20 times, it POSTed, but cut out when loading windows, I heard this clicking sound again as it cut out. When trying to power on again, I heard some high frequency sounds n that particular boot. I can't pinpoint either sound exactly, but the 'click' seems to be coming from the CPU region, could the CPU emit such a sound? Or could it be a voltage regulator?

          most laptops are designed in a way to work only with 65W or 90W power supplies. When a program tries to use more power, probably something fails in the laptop. Such programs do not suite laptops and can be run on desktop computers with more than 400W power supplies. how many watts does your laptop's AC adapter provide?

            It's a 180W power supply. I tried using the benchmark software because the system crashed initially when I was running a basic graphics related task, I think it was just a YouTube video, or it could have been when I was updating the graphics card drivers. I don't think the benchmark software would cause the system to draw excess power, surely the hardware & drivers will cap this at its TDP value? Essentially I'm trying to determine whether the fault lies with the motherboard or the MXM graphics card. I wanted to avoid wasting money on an expensive card if that's just going to fail too.

              there is no need to buy anything. just do some tests to discover the cause of the problem.
              first find the exact place of the clicking sound. then check whether any IC gets hot on the mainboard or on the MXM card.

                Can you switch from discrete gpu to intel ?
                or try to install passmark performance test and run it with intel gpu and see if the system it's stable.

                  I did conduct some research regarding activating Intel HD Graphics on this model, and apparently it isn't possible, even with a custom BIOS. It's not visible in device manager and cannot be activated in the BIOS. I am able to boot into Windows without the card present, and I can see it connected to my router. I was hoping to install some remote access software so that I could run some tests without the GPU to eliminate the issue being motherboard/power related. The video inputs seem to be tied to the MXM card. Currently I can POST with the card installed, but it won't fully load into Windows anymore. The problem is pointing toward the card being faulty, but I guess it's also possible the motherboard circuitry related to the MXM slot could also be at fault.

                  Caspian, it's quite difficult to pinpoint the source of the clicks. The MXM card is mounted over the top of the motherboard, so there's a lot of components I cannot get to. I think I'll just keep my eyes open for a cheap MXM card as it's probably the chip that has died.

                    You can try to use a linux distro, without nvidia driver installed I think that it use as gpu only the intel hd ,if you can use remote access you could activate the nvidia log to see whats happen. To make this there are two script files that enable or disable full nvidia logs

                      It would be great if you can connect using Remote-Desktop and run the same previous tests without the MXM card.
