    ASUS N71Jq freezing randomly

    Hi guys,

I have here a weird problem with an ASUS N81Jq laptop. It's freezing randomly, sometimes even in BIOS.

The laptop has the latest version of BIOS (208).

Temperatures are rather high (max. 77C) despite cleaning the ventilation system with compressed air. I haven't tried replacing the thermal paste yet.

I tried different RAM sticks and it didn't help either.

    Any ideas?

P.S. The last freeze occured almost right after the desktop showed up and the computer ended up shutting down maybe 20 seconds later.

I noticed that the fan was spinning relatively slowly at 2200rpm. After a bit of googling I found a program that worked - NoteBook FanControl which lets me set the speed manually. When run at 100% speed, I was able to get temps as low as 36C. I also disassembled the entire laptop yesterday, cleaned everything once more and applied Arctic Silver 5.

I haven't gotten a freeze since and let's hope it's stays that way. However, I'm curious why Windows fails to properly control the fan allowing the system to overheat?

The laptop already has the latest BIOS so there's nothing to update.
