Hp Pavilion DM4 Display turn OFF after Driver Install

I know that on some old ati, like the 5000 series the backlight turns off after installing latest driver from ati/amd.
Solution, stick to the old driver.
But in this case, it's not a backlight problem, as the display just turn OFF while the system continues to work, i need to boot in safe mode to remove the driver.
System is with Core i5 and ATI 5470 Graphics

I'm using the original HP hard disc and even made a factory restore.
I also used the version 13.4 that work with the backlight issues, doesn't work.

Re: Hp Pavilion DM4 Display turn OFF after Driver Install

I don't have any problem to boot in safe mode, cause once the driver is installed, the display turns off.
The only way to get it working is to remove the driver in safe mode.
                Tested Win7 and 8.1

I'm going to reflow the northbridge

Re: Hp Pavilion DM4 Display turn OFF after Driver Install

therefore, the northbridge was the problem?
how did the driver installation damage the northbridge?
Or the northbridge was damaged by some other cause such as physical pressure or cracked solder?

I would guess it is more related to ATI HD5470 failure not Intel PCH (northbridge as you call it). When you reflowed the PCH the ATI chip got some heat too and got its act together.

I have not seen a failed PCH yet on this generation board, plenty of failed GPUs though.

Re: Hp Pavilion DM4 Display turn OFF after Driver Install

I think there are three possibilities:

                          1. the driver update damaged the GPU or PCH.
                          2. the driver update revealed an old damage in the GPU or PCH. For example, the new driver uses a cracked solder pad of the chip whereas the old driver did not use it.
                          3. the GPU or the PCH was damaged by the repairman during the repair by mistake.

                          which one is more probable?

Not sure, cause i first reflowed the GPU, is evident ...

                            1. Never see something similar
                            2. Improbable, cause old and original driver wasn't either working
                            3. Dificult, this machine was never opened, and i make reballs since a few years, this is a domain that i have some knowhow ..
