Toshiba A205 freezes with AC charger

Hey guys,

Got this laptop yesterday for inspection,
My friend got it as a gift for free,
It came without AC charger, and the touchpad didn't work,

The touchpad isn't working because the former tech ripped the cable between
the mainboard and touchpad.
Before ordering parts, i decided to do some testing.

I teseted it temporarly with universal charger but it froze on boot,
charged it all night and booted with battery it didn't froze.
sometimes the freeze came as freeze and sometimes as scambled picture and then freeze. everything looks fine, on the mainboard, I did a new layer of thermal paste on the CPU and chipset. (tested with a good working CPU) but with no change

i've searched and found there is a common failure in the NEC/TOKEN OE128
is there any way of testing it before replacing,
from what i saw it isn't a simple process.

Just replace the Tokin, there's about a 99% chance it's because of that. Don't mess about trying to test it. You can find the four required tantalum caps in the vcore section of any old scrap board.

It's not too hard though really, as someone with very minimal soldering skill I managed to do it. Crush the Tokin with pliers, use a small needle to remove the bottom layers, then solder the caps in place.

First tested whith a original charger.is known when put a universal charger the thouchpad not work or froze,after that if is any problems the Nectokin is fauty and must to be replaced as spleenharvester said.

I think the same, change the Nec tokin to 4 capacitors 330uf, you put two on each side and the positive faces away.

Good news I replaced the NEC TOKIN to 4X330uf 2.5v panassonic lows esr EEFSX0E331ER
the laptop is now working again!

the hard part was getting the chip out, came out in pieces
