A1706 fails to install OS to any disk

    Lectori salutem!

    The patient is an A1706 model - 2017 mb pro 13” core i7 16GB 512GB 4-thunderbolt ports

    Symptoms:
    • Boots in recovery mode (Sierra)
    • Internal SSD is visible and can be erased / partitioned
    • Sierra install starts with 6 minutes estimate, but at the end of the countdown fails with “An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again.”
    • The same happens when I connect an external SSD or a USB-C thumbdrive and try to reinstall Sierra on that drive.
    • Does not boot from external (Sonoma) bootable thumbdrive
    • I have tried installing to several different drives numerous times, but the result is always the same
    Observations / actions
    • no signs of liquid damage, board looks very clean
    • took out the board anyway, cleaned all connectors and thunderbolt ports with IPA, dried and put back
    • NVRAM and PRAM reset
    Questions
    • Could it be a corrupted EFI chip?
    • If so, can it be fixed or do I have to order a replacement?
    • Is it possible to force internet recovery to load a newer OS version than Sierra?
Thank you for taking an interest!

To reset PRAM on your Macbook Pro, you need to
      1. Shut down your computer and disconnect all USB devices (except wired keyboards).
      2. Press the power button to turn on your Mac.
      3. Immediately press and hold the Option, Command, P, and R keys on your keyboard.
      4. Hold down these keys for 20 seconds, during which time your Mac will appear to restart.
      5. Release the keys and let your Mac finish rebooting

Not the first time (“no bag entry” error) but after correcting with ntpdate time and date are ok.

the Benninger already did PRAM reset several times.

T1 machines are not supported by Sonoma. Try Monterey installer from USB. Some 2017 machines support Ventura. Some don't.

          Sierra way too old.

Yeah, I noticed so I tried Sierra and High Sierra as well but it just wouldn't boot from those on external drives.
Spurred on by your suggestion I tried every single release, none of which worked unitl... Big Sur!
Somehow it booted Big Sur without issue and the installer to the local SSD ran fine. I'm updating to Monterey as we speak.

Thank you, you just saved me a $35 EFI chip and a lot of time!

ASUS ROG STRIX B550-I GAMING - M.2_2 port not working correctly with SAMSUNG SSD980 1TB NVME SSD
              by DynaxSC
              Hi,

I have an really very weired issue with ASUS ROG STRIX B550-I GAMING.

Some NVME (PCIe) SSD's are not working correctly in the second M.2 socket. An example of it is the SAMSUNG SSD980 1TB NVME SSD.
Some other NVME (I have only smaller ones) disk do work without any problem, also SAMSUNG disks, eg an MZVPV128HDGM-0000.

The behaviour is also really very strange, i.e.:
              • The disk shows always up in BIOS - so it is recognized, so far so good
              • POST-ing with this disk with fresh Windows 24H2 installation (done in the M.2_1 socket) in the M.2_2 socket
              ...

A1989 EMC3214 can't boot to USB drives due to T2 but SSD can't be initialized and Macbook freezes then reboots in recovery

Hey folks, I'm working a 2018 13" Macbook Pro that I can't get to install an OS on.

This was given to me by a friend who told me I could have it, if I fixed it.

I've noticed a couple of dents on the laptop case and the touch bar doesn't have any activity lights when first turning on. When I boot up the machine, it gives a folder with a question mark. When I do eventually get to internet recovery with High Sierra, I can go to Disk Utility but I'll get errors when I try to erase the 512GB SSD. First Aid comes back with no issues. But if you linger too long on anything,...

A2141 (2019 16" MB Pro) Strange macOS install issues. NAND? WIFI? FIRMWARE?
              by duwane
              Hi All.

Sorry ahead of time for the text wall. This is a strange problem and I have tried to explain it as best I can. I realise this is a hardware forum (mostly), but I am still not sure if this is even a hardware fault! I am hoping that someone more knowledgeable than me in the area of understanding installation logs, or someone that has had a similar issue in the past may have some ideas of what might be causing this.

              The issue:
Unable to do a clean install of any macOS versions supported for this model, even after fully erasing and formatting the internal SSD,...

DRIVER_PNP_WATCHDOG error re. old drivers in Windows 11 install image
              by japlytic
In a Beelink GTR mini PC, mine has an Intel AX200NGW WLAN module.

              Tried (only with keyboard/mouse connected):
              • BIOS + database update
              • Using latest Windows 11 image built with official image creation tool
              • Previous setup version for Windows 11 installer
              • Replacing SSD without a slow block (the previous SSD had a slow block with access time > 500 mS)
              • TPM reset (worked to the point where DRIVER_PNP_WATCHDOG error message is displayed briefly after the point of stalling)
              • Disabling power to WLAN and LAN modules in BIOS (Advanced > AMD PBS > PCI Express Configuration)
              ...
