    How Much is Toshiba Satellite A215-s5837 w/cracked screen worth?

    The owner said she had it for 4 years or so.

    It supposedly boots up ok, but you have to
    minimized the windows to avoid the cracks, so
    you can see what you are doing. She said
    she didn't try an external display, but I suspect
    it should work fine.

    Replacement screens on Ebay were about
    $90 including $10 for shipping, so about $100
    total, which is about what they go for used,
    in working condition.

    Anyone chime in?

    Buying used laptops, in my opinion, is usually never a good deal.

    1) It looks like this laptop may be 4 years old so the battery is near end of life.

    2) You don't know what other abuse the laptop has been through. Was it dropped, liquid spills, taken apart, etc.

    3) Some laptops run hot (due to inadequate cooling or dust) and that shortens the life of the components.

    4) Some repairs require that you have some sort of electronic unlock code or reprogramming code after changing major components.

    Now having said the above, both my laptops at home were purchased used, but I bought both for 10% of their original value (or 90% off) and both were in perfect working condition.

      She said yes to $30, but I'm thinking
      of offering $20, after reading how expensive the
      replacement screens are.

        You've been looking at the prices for new screens. That screen is probably used on multiple Toshiba models. If you do get the laptop at the price you offer, then open up the screen enclosure and pull out the cracked screen. On the back of it you will find out the manufacturer and part number for that screen. Look for a screen under that part number. If you don't mind a used screen, then you might be able to score one at a much lower cost. If you can't get a screen at a reasonable price, then you should be able to make a few $$ if you part the thing out and sell the parts individually.

          Original screen is a 15.4" 1280x800 LG-Philips LP154WX5 (TL) (A1)
          (the stuff in brackets defines if it's glossy etc. and the revision. Not too important)

          As long as the resolution matches and it has the 30pin LVDS connector in more or less the same spot (which most of them do), it'll work. Matte or glossy doesn't matter.

              It's a fairly standard LCD (for laptops at least). 15.4", 1280x800, single CCFL for backlight. The only other super-common one is 15.6" 1366x768, which are mostly LED backlit (newer laptops ; incompatible due to size, resolution and LED backlight)

              "TruBrite" is usually just a marketing BS term for those nasty glossy screens.

              If you have the laptop, the easiest to do would be to open the top part up and look what panel model was originally in there, then strip anything in brackets after the model number (like this (TL) (A1) stuff) and search for it on ebay.
              Even if the auctions have really ridiculous prices, take a look regardless. Most of them conveniently list compatible LCD models which you can search for (and usually get one heck of a lot cheaper.. as you can see in my previous post lol)

                So you're 100% sure the LTN154X3-L03 will work?

                And what's wrong with glossy screens? They seem fine to me,
                and in fact, the blacks appear darker.....

                  Also, isn't it dangerous to be shipping these ultra fragile
                  LCD screens? unless they pack them REALLY well.....

                    Like i said.. if you get the laptop tomorrow, look what panel model is in there from the factory. A lot of them are interchangeable (same specs, just from a different manufacturer).

                    Unless the seller is dumb enough to ship it in a normal padded envelope (which happened to me once.. cracked panel of course), it should be fine in a small packet.

                      Ok, thanks for the info.

                      But Christ, now the lady calls me and tells me she cannot
                      find the charger! They are $8.35 on Ebay.

                      Guess I'll offer her like $15 tomorrow, and hope she still bites....

                        For the specs this thing has, that's pretty much a ripoff for $30 already.. now talking her down to $15? I'm outta here..

                        Actually just wanted to post some infos about the LTN154X3-L03 as i happened to find one in my pile of LCDs, but yeah.. not this way..

                          Well, that was my original question:

                          How much do you think it's worth? What do you think is a fair price?

                          I've never had a laptop, so I have no idea what they are worth....especially
                          broken....
