Asus eeePC netbook

I've got a little netbook that is in pieces. It was my brothers and he put that thing through quite some hell during its 3 or so years of abuse.

It currently is a no boot no power solution. I don't believe it to be the power brick as I'm able to receive the status lights when its plugged in. I have done plenty of recapping, but these small kind of boards aren't quite the same thing as a full desktop motherboard. Any insight on how to determine the issue I may be experiencing. I've never troubleshot anything component level other than capacitors.

I do have a Blue ESR meter at my disposal if that is useful beyond caps. Any advice?

Which model is it?
Should be on a label on the bottom. Ex: 900HD, 1005HA, 1008PE, etc.

Do you mean the LED on the PSU brick or some LED on the netbook by "status light" ?

Input is a 12v 3A, 36w power supply that comes with it (just incase)


And I meant a status light on the netbook itself... although I'm starting to second guess that there was one at all. Pretend I never mentioned it , just in case I'm wrong. Would hate to send us on a wild goose chase.

Like I said this used to be my little brother's netbook and he loved it. He has been looking for a new one but doesn't want to spend the cash and can't find one similar. Plus he is over in the desert (military) right now, I figured if I could get it up and going again, he'd have something he wouldn't mind beating up a little bit. He would be ultra surprised to see his old faithful little machine revived.

hmm.. this doesn't use the super tiny DC barrel plug (~ 1.5mm outer diameter) like the 1005-1008 series.
Those were common to have the pin in the socket break off because it's just so absurdly tiny and thin.

Do any of the LEDs on the netbook light up? A blinking or solid power led should indicate that the battery is charging.
Removed the battery and tried powering it up? (or powering it up with the battery but no AC adapter)
May sound stupid: checked if you actually get 12V at the plug (break in cable)?

Some models have had problems with the USB cable going to the webcam above the screen rubbing against the hinges, till it shorts out 5V and the whole netbook plays dead.

Unfortunately, my favorite source of eeePC related infos (namely the eeeuser.com forum) is down "for maintenance", which it has been for almost a month now..
