Acer Aspire no display, ok external monitor

Hi, got a stange one here, came to me as display not working but works fine on external monitor, I turned it on and the display worked, got to windows and blue screened, tried again and the same, left it a few hours and tried again, no display, tried external monitor and it's fine, goes to windows no blue screens, tried another screen and inverter still nothing, checked the inverter power, I get 18v on the vnn but only 0.2 on the switch and 0v on the adjust, I've checked the cable and I get continuity on the said wires.
I could get another cable to double check but it looks like a power issue to me, the laptop works fine on external monitor, but the laptops display doesn't work, when it did the laptop blue screened.
Any help as to where to look.
    Thanks.

        Hello!
Just out of curiosity, how can it work fine on an external monitor with a GPU in need of reballing? I would have thought that there would be same problems with display on external display if the GPU needed reballing. Please enlighten me!

I don't know but it did, I guess the gpu must somehow control the inverter power, and this is not needed on an external monitor.
If anyone knows the answer for sure, I'd be interested.

Shine a flashlight into the lcd screen on the laptop if you can see something displaying then the inverter or the ccfl bulbs/wiring has gone bad and will need repair/replacement. Otherwise you got a bad video cable or the lcd screen itself has gone bad or something from the mainboard has gone kaput.

Find a video on youtube or google for breakdown instructions on your particular model.
