This HP G60 got a cracked screen about 2 years ago and was used with an external monitor until it was replaced with another laptop. I'm not sure about what circumstances led to the screen being damaged but I do know the damage started off small with only the crack and a bit of bleeding and progressed to make the display almost completely unusable with flickering and lines across the display.

Is this normal for this type of LCD? Because I am suspicious of the LVDS cable, or something on the motherboard. VGA output is pretty good though.
This is my sister's old laptop - I got it for free, so I'm looking to replace the LCD panel. However, I want to know if that is a viable option - is it possible whatever caused the crack [unknown - she claims it was not her fault and I'm still on the fence] has also damaged something similar to the T-Con in LCD TVs, or the LVDS cable itself?
