Dell Latitude D600 white lines on screen

    Good morning all

I have this dell latitude d600 laptop and the screen has white lines on it but if I connect an external monitor to the laptop the picture is fine though the white lines stay on the lcd, I have already replaced the motherboard thinking it was the video card but it was not.

if it is the lcd do I need to replace the whole lcd or is there just a certain part on the lcd causing this? thanks for any help and advice!

Without pictures, it is just a guess, but your symptoms are consistent with a panel problem (though in my experience, the lines are usually colored and not white). On the rear, there is a logic board with fragile ribbon style connectors bonded to the panel. One of these may have developed an issue, and it is rarely fixable (and even then, only temporary) by applying pressure. The only permanent fix is to replace the LCD panel assembly itself. FYI for future reference -- since the external monitor worked, this would rule out the video card on the laptop. Not sure what order you did the tests and parts replacement.

One thing I would try before swapping out the panel is to clean the contacts of each of the connectors and try again. Good luck!

Yeah, I just repaired a Toshiba laptop with a single vertical white line on the display. Replaced the LCD display and that solved the problem.

Probably the best place for used/new LCD panels is Ebay. I was lucky and got mine for $20 because I was the only bidder. Others were selling new panels for at least $70 and up.

That's definitely a screen problem. Cleaning the cable likely did not make the line smaller, rather moving around the screen temporarily reconnected some disconnected traces, which made the line smaller.

someone on another forum suggested that I replace the ribbon cable as it seems to be a cable problem so I ordered a new one on ebay it only cost me 1.98 with free shipping so im not out much

It's not likely the ribbon cable...it's possible though. A bad ribbon cable can cause vertical banding, but it's usually huge bands, not the thin bands you're seeing.

it seems like they are only in the areas where the ribbon cable is so who knows it might fix it and like I said im only out $1.98 so its not big deal

I had a D600 and it too had a screen problem where it had a band an inch wide on the right side of the screen. I found that pressing the upper right corner of the screen would get rid of the band so I opened the monitor up put some tape behind the right corner and never had a problem since. I fluked a solution not a repair, still don't know what was wrong. Have since got rid of it. Hope you have luck with the ribbon cable.
