HP Pavilion x360 intermittent trackpad & keyboard only in windows

    Hi all,

Just wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing this as after googling it I found quite a few users expecting it but unfortunately no fixes. I've got a hp pavilion x360 that I've had for a little over a year now and after replacing the ssd and reinstalling windows 10 last week now suddenly the keyboard and trackpad don't want to work sometimes in windows.

I've isolated it to only windows. Every time I boot into the bios it works fine. Sometimes when rebooting windows they will work, sometimes they won't I have to use the touch screen to enter my pin and to use the system no matter what I do it won't come back until I reboot the system like 4 or so times than finally it will come back to working again.

I've tried all the usual solutions like uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, rolling back windows updates, disabling than enabling the devices in device manager, nothing solves it. I can see online this seems to be quite a common issue but no one seems to have a solution to it. I even contacted HP and they had no freaking clue apart from the steps mentioned above they want me to send it in for repairs despite it being pretty obvious it's not a hardware fault.

    Thanks for your assistance.

Sorry forgot to mention this isn’t the first machine I’ve had doing this either. About a month ago I fixed the exact same model with a no power issue and it also had a intermittent trackpad & keyboard but the customer didn’t care as he uses externals anyway and desperately needed to get his uni assignments done. Seems to be a serious flaw with HPs drivers but because this is a old machine it’s not receiving updates anymore so it doesn’t look like this will ever get fixed.

How does it behave if in Windows safe mode?

      Link or post a schematic.

Try loading Win7 for test purpose.

I haven't had a look for schematics for this as I don't have the board out, and usually you need that to find them. This was just a simple ssd swap so I'd rather not take the board out and introduce more variables unless i absolutely have to.

Haven't tried 7 so I'll give that a shot next week and report back. As for win 10 safe mode same behaviour as normal windows.

One thing that's strange though is according to hps website if you hold down the esc key while booting that should take you to the bios but with this one it doesn't it just loads windows every time. I can get it into the bios though, and I can even load the hardware diagnostics tests using f11 if i remember right so other key combos are working.

One other thing I was thinking is would it be worth downloading synaptics drivers from their website directly and trying to install those? HP doesn't have any newer drivers but I was hoping sometimes you can bypass this by going straight to the actual manufacturer of the parts website instead.

Have you tried to put back the original M2 Drive? Try to make a clone of the original drive and then use hp restore feature to put it back to factory settings. Also You can try to disable secure boot from UEFI settings and reinstall OS again.

Unfortunately I can't put back the original m.2 as it failed, that was the reason this laptop came in. Secure boot was originally enabled so I had to disable and clear the keys before reinstalling windows.

I'm thinking it's a recent windows update that's caused this issue. When I did a reinstall of 22h2 everything was fine, spent a few hours re installing drivers and copying old data from the customers old laptop to this one everything was fine until I decided to fully update windows and the final optional cumulative update seems to be what caused the issue but when I use the recovery mode to roll back updates it's not resolving the issue. I'm thinking I have to do a fresh wipe and re install again.

This can be closed off the issues resolved itself somehow. Left the laptop on sleep Thursday arvo with the keyboard and trackpad not working came back Tuesday morning to find the laptop off. Turned it back on and now no matter what I do I can't get the original fault to reproduce. Multiple reboots and both the keyboard and trackpad are fine. Guess the Easter bunny decided to fix it for me
                  Freaking Microsoft!!!

                  Thanks for the advice everyone.
