EBC-820 "Apple diagnostic tool" -- does this work?

The EBC-820 relies on the J6100 interface (its unclear if it works on 2018+ either, which'd negate any real value).

IF it does 'debug' issues on newer units, the video shows it providing error codes and 'breadcrumbs' to follow & fix identified issue(s).

Is this a gimmick for suckers (like me)..? Are there better products that are also affordable...?

Lastly, does anyone have suggestions on how to learn how to follow the schematic // boardview to trace problems..? Because even when watching the video it was unclear how certain selections were made (provided no basis for the "choose your own adventure" choices they were making).

    https://vimeo.com/458915497?embedded...owner=69200627

You'll see in the video that it makes selections without saying how it knew to make those (or at least I didn't know how it made them).

    Thanks in advance ...

That's just like a POST diagnostic card. You can get the same info with any POST diagnostic card with an LPC interface. It's no more useful than that. Won't tell you what's the problem and how to fix it.
This tool just has a fancy cable to hook up directly to the J6100 debug connector on compatible models to make it easy, rather than having to solder 8 wires directly to the board (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K63AvEW3XLw).
Note that Apple removed the LPC interface from the debug connector in 2015 so this fancy cable is only useful on older models.

It's present through 2017, but I take your drift ...

Is there a way to hook up to 2018+ units via the "LPC interface" ...?

Are there any other means (or products) that can simplify debugging ..?

SWD or DSCD cables? I know it's a legal grey area tho...

Apple 076-00236 Genuine Apple Data Migration Tool for MacBook Pro 2016 2017
          by samstown
          Hello,

This special tool from Apple is used to recover data from Macbook A1706. I've been using it for a while but it stops working. When connecting Thunderbolt 3 between the tool and working Macbook, Macbook should prompt "new device detected, allow or not"... but it doesn't.

Has anyone ever experience this ? It's not a cabling or power supply issue, some IC have stopped working but not sure which one. Probably the one that manager thunderbolt 3

          Thanks
          Claude...

Apple Watch Charging Controller Schematics / Boardview - 820-02601
          by a_p3rson
          Hi there,

I'm looking for anyone who might have information on Apple's embedded Apple Watch charging daughterboard, ID 820-02601. This is currently used by Anker in their Apple Watch charging products, but likely by other Apple partner brands as well.

You can see the board referenced in ChargerLab's teardown of the Anker Y1811 3-in-1 MagSafe cube - they discuss the "Apple Watch wireless charging circuit" about 2/3rds down the page. It's not pictured, but the board ID reads 820-02601-A, which sure sounds like Apple.
          This daughterboard uses an interesting...

Launch Automotive Diagnostic Tool Missing Diode and Cap
          by Kyleadonis
Hi there, I need some help identifying replacements for a Launch Diagnostic Plug In Tool. I can't seem to find any information on the LF 7HZPU Diode so I have no idea what to replace it with if anyone can help? Also there is a missing component on the side that I highlighted in green and I assuming it's a cap?

I have added some photos for reference....

Intel iMacs, 3rd party SSD failures and Fusion setups
          by reformatt
I thought I'd throw out some of my personal experiences in the last 12 months with Intel iMacs, 2.5" SATA SSD drives and Fusion drive data recoveries.

As a backgrounder, Apple never fitted a 2.5" SSD's to these iMacs. Apple's SSD option was a system of 32GB NVMe blade drive (NGFF connector) and Seagate 1TB 2.5" HDD, married together in software to become a Fusion drive. Non Fusion systems have just the 1TB Seagate HDD.

So, the most common reason an iMac comes across my bench is because it's either ridiculously slow, or it fails to boot at all. The most...
