Hi all. First post here, so I hope I'm getting this right and operating in the spirit of things here.
I've been working on consoles for a while now. Always learning and trying new repairs, but I have one that has been stumped and I wondered if anyone with more experience could help?
I picked up a PS5 from eBay recently. It was described as not having the disc drive, but it was also a no power unit. On testing it was clearly an issue with the supply (no 12v), so I replaced that and then when I inserted the power lead, I got 3 beeps. So far, seems all related. As I was going to need to change it to a digital console anyway, I didn't see this as an issue. I went to a well known YouTuber's site and bought a EDM-031 Digital BIOS chip. However, when installed the console will simply not power on. If I put the old one back, it will power on, but immediately into the screen that says it was unable to install the update, or if I hold down the power it will go into safe mode. So, as it stands, I have a console that will power on, but can't update because there is no disc drive, or one that has supposedly the right Digital BIOS in place, but won't power on at all.
To try and work out whether I've been sold a dud replacement BIOS chip, I picked up a CH341A read/writer. I've used a programming tool to save a copy of the 'working' disc BIOS and then followed some steps I found online to covert it to a Digital one. These are:
- Open the BIOS .bin file in a hex editor
- Press Ctrl + G, enter 001C7011, and press Enter. This will navigate to the first address. The cursor will highlight a value of 02. Change this value to 03.
- Press Ctrl + G again, enter 001C7038, and press Enter. This will navigate to the second address. The cursor will highlight a value of 89. Change this value to 8D.
- Save the modified BIOS file.
Again, when it is updated and in place, the console will not power on, but when I revert it back, it will power into safe mode or try to apply an update. I even tried writing a copy of the 'working' BIOS to another spare chip I have from another console and it still powered on, but obviously that's no good for me as I have to somehow get this thing to think it is a Digital console!
Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to break this cycle?
Maybe a trusted/working Digital BIOS file is all I need? Or should I be able to amend and rewrite the one I have, but using different steps to those set out above ?
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Edit: I've actually managed to resolve this now using some of the information on other pages here.
Thanks
