    Asus Ptgd-la

I'm fixing an HP Media Center PC for a friend - ASUS PTGD-LA ("Goldfish3").
Computer is completely dead - no action when activating power switch, but there is a green LED on on the power supply when plugged in to AC (some standby voltage like activate on LAN?). I know a lot about computers but ignore details like this until I have to learn about them!

There are several large electrolytics with burst tops and leaking electrolyte. I assume that this is the "capacitor plague" - bad Taiwanese caps due to incomplete electrolyte formula. There are over 22 billion of them sitting on somebody's shelf and some scumbag is going to use them.

    Questions:

Is it worth replacing caps on this board; i.e. is there likely to be other things wrong given the currrent state - dead?

Does anyone have the HP tattooing software to tattoo a new mother board if above fails or is not worth it?

    Thanks!

    Re: Asus Ptgd-la

I understand that caps are leaking on the motherboard. Check around to make sure that no other component is burnt or melted, no action on pressing the power button may indicate more hidden problems possibly in the power supply. Open up the power supply and check for bulging or leaking caps.

If there are no other damaged components on the motherboard there is a good prospect that a recap will be successful. Suspect caps in the power supply must also be changed. The challenge will be to have the right equipment and skill. Find out what you need to achieve in the Recapping threads of this forum and also what replacements you will need. Ideally if you have not recapped previously you should either get someone to do it for you or to get the right gear and first practice on an old motherboard from a scrap heap somewhere.

If you are in the US then Topcat can recap the board for you. If that is a good choice send him a PM.

      Re: Asus Ptgd-la

i know that this is an old thread, but i have one of these boards with the same problem...

i just cleaned it all up because it was caked with grime, and i plugged it into a known good power supply, and it failed the smoke test....

the large cap in the center of the 775 socket popped and smoked....

      (i think it's a cap)

i didn't even get to push the on/off button...

i looked up the part but i can't find it, maybe somebody can lend a hand?
