    ASUS P5QD Turbo USB problems

I got this motherboard from a friend and was told that the USB ports aren't working. I tried it myself and indeed, the mouse and keyboard weren't recognised. However, the USB laptop DVD-ROM works!? I was able to boot and install windows from it. I also tried a USB 3.0 flash drive and it shows up as Unknown Device in the Device Manager so that's useless. USB headers on the motherboard are unusable as well.

Everything else appears to be working fine: sound, network, PS/2 ports...

Any ideas? I haven't tried flashing the BIOS yet.

One or more of the ports could be shorted, try inspecting them carefully and measure resistance from data lines to ground.

OK, here's a stupid question... can I do this on the port itself or do I have to find ground on the motherboard?

The metal of the USB port is a suitable ground.
