    Asus PTGD-LA Random reboot

    HP Pavilion A1310y,Intel Pent 4 517 W/HT 2.9GHz
    256 X2 DDR2
    XP Pro
    160 GB Seagate SATA
    American Megatrends Bios V3.28
It will post but I don't get single beep meaning everything is ok
If I take the memory out I get beeps so I know the speaker works
If I start in safe mode it will run all night without rebooting
Did clean install XP pro SP3
Wiped hard drive and formatted NTFS
Used HP recovery disk and restored to original factory conditions
Will bad caps cause it to not get the beep after post

    Re: Asus PTGD-LA Random reboot

Is this computer supposed to beep when powered on, and everything is fine?

    What psu are you using?

Is there any sort of error message when or after the reboot occurs?

Edit: looks like this motherboard has problems with Nippon Chemi-Con KZG capacitors, look to see if any capacitors are bulged, have gunk on the tops, or are suspiciously tilted to one side.

When that motherboard was manufactured, Asus sometimes used UCC TMV capacitors for the VRM low. Those are those short stubby capacitors around the CPU socket. If this is the case with your board, they will have to be replaced with equivalent polymers. They always used 8mm KZG for the VRM high, and those will definitely need to be replaced.

I should tell you, if those VRM low caps are TMV, their replacements will cost around a dollar each. It would also be wise for you to check the PSU that is powering this system.

This is a 915 Chipset board and will take nothing higher than single core Prescotts. May not be worth your while.

They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

1 long beep POST has passed all test
        From American Megatrends

I get no beeps would bad caps cause this?

No message or error codes when reboots
Checked event viewer and have no errors

Tried another known good PS same problem
I unchecked the box that restarts xp when problem occurs
The computer froze and the video looked like squares in incorrect order
I will try to disable integrated video and put PCI video card
Their is no socket for PCI-e or AGP

          Thanks for everyone's help

Check these caps. Do any of them look bloated or have the bunge bulging out from the bottom?

With an AMI BIOS, 1 short beep (or any beeps, except 1 long on some boards) is an error code. Only Phoenix and Award use 1 short beep for "OK".

              1 short DRAM refresh failure
              2 short Memory parity error
3 short Base 64K memory failure
              4 short System timer failure
              5 short Processor error
              6 short Gate A20 failure
7 short Virtual mode processor exception error
8 short Display memory read/write error
              9 short ROM checksum error
10 short CMOS shutdown register read/write error
              11 short Cache error
1 long, 2 short Failure in video system
1 long, 3 short Memory test failure
1 long, 8 short Display test failure
              2 short POST Failure
1 long POST has passed all tests (very rare, I have never had a board that did this)

                  Re: Asus PTGD-LA Random reboot

Replaced 11 TMV caps the bottom black rubber plugs were being pushed out.
Thanks mockingbird and everyone else for the help.
                  The board works fine now.
Replaced caps fans would come on no video
                  Rest bios jumper no video
                  Pulled battery no video
Pulled board out of case checked + and - all correct
Hooked up PS on bed no video
Checked voltage at capacitors all had 1.3v
Put board back in case with 1 screw Now it works.

                      Re: Asus PTGD-LA Random reboot

Check for more UCC KZG series caps around the board, especially near the 4-pin 12V and 24-pin power connectors, the 8mm VRM high caps, and the caps around the RAM slots. Those would cause the type of intermittent behavior you described...

What did you replace them with by the way?
