    partial success K7T266 Pro2

    It's been a long wait, but I finally recapped this board and got a new CPU and RAM for it (I'd replaced the motherboard in the system it had been in...)

    When I initially tried to POST this system, it complained that the CPU fan was not spinning...an obvious lie.

    Going into the Bios (AMI bios V3.5) the "Hardare Monitor" page hangs after displaying most of the information on the left side.

    I tried reflashing the BIOS to V3.7 (current latest on the MSI site). Now it seems to see the CPU fan OK, but the Hardware Monitor page still hangs.

    It displays all of the readings except that for the -5V.

    Anyone seen something like this? Is the motherboard dead? I've got an Athlon XP 2000+ procesor in it, which is supposed to run on a 133Mhz Front bus. Instead it's set to a 100Mhz FB. and since the Hardware Monitor page hangs, I can't make any adjustments to the settings there...which is where these frequency settings are.

    This sort of flakiness is sometimes seen when running a Thoroughbred processor in a board that was only designed for a Palomino, or a T'bred B in a board that only supports a Palomino/T'bred A, or a Barton in a board which only supports up to a T'Bred B.

    I had this happen once on a K7SEM derivative, and the board also ate the T' bred B CPU after a while. The old pains of Athlon-era flakiness are no longer there in S754/S939/AM2 - good riddance.

      I guess you've replaced every Tayeh and Lelon - if not, replace them first. Also, try replacing the KZGs as well, with non-aqueous replacements: LXY/LXZ or Nichicon PW or Panasonic FC/FK.

        I have a modded BIOS for this -5V hang, I just need to find where it is in my CDs.

        To run Thoroughbred Athlon or Barton in this board you need to do the known C37 capacitor fix, ie, remove it with soldering iron with a lot of care.

          Without this C37mod, if you try to use any Tbred or Barton you will get 4 RED LEDs on D-Bracket.

          Another thing, don't try to remove C37 with any sharp tool as some users had done in MSI forum. This procedure can damage under it.

            K7T266Pro2-RU 2.0 BIOS mod with -5V disabled from original v3.7 latest from MSI. Get here.

              Wow! Thanks for all the responses

              RE: T'bred... I was careful to get a Palamino Athlon as the MSI site had stated that the board worked with Palamino's up to 2100+. This is a palamino (i.e. square die casing) processor.

              I'll try the modded BIOS right away! Thank you for finding it.

                Thank you, Danten!!! That modified BIOS worked perfectly. I was able to set the FSB to 133 and the BIOS now detects the CPU as an Athlon XP 2000+.

                  I'm glad to know that it worked well. I supposed this -5V hang problem was restricted to me and my motherboard only and I done this mod to myself.

                  I never thought this could affected other owners. Well I hope this BIOS can help others too, I will publish in my blog so google can index it. I don't know if index this forum.

                    Dante,

                    I am having one other problem, that I also see some others have had in the past with this motherboard (http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.html?i=1578&p=15). Every time I try a warm reboot, it fails the keyboard check. Cold boots seem to be fine.

                    Any ideas for a workaround? I didn't see anything in the BIOS to allow bypassing the check (and the articles also mentioned no support for that.)
