Dell inspiron 1420 laptop - lcd veritcal lines

Shows vertical lines immediately when powered on. I tried to hook a desktop lcd in the background of pic up but I couldn't get the monitor to show anything.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    thanks

First thought is a lose cable from graphics board to LCD.

dismantled checked and all cables seemed fine.
i went ahead and redid the plug that goes to the mobo and the one behind the lcd panel itself.

      still getting the lines.

      next steps?

            based off google searching:

Graphics Card GMA X3100, GF Go 8400M GS

This laptop was given to me in this condition so I don't have much knowledge other than a model # but I believe the Go is inside

              Failed nVidia chip.

You can try baking the board to see if it will relow it, it's toast anyway.

Finally, you have all of the information at hand you could possibly need, whack the service tag into Dell's site!

                  figured I'd post my results

reflow appears to have fixed the problem

and a visual of the results

                  thanks again. love this forum

                    Hello all

I am having similar vertical lines as drshlitz. Mine is a few at the top and bad rendering of colors. Sometimes even a blank white screen. However when I hook my device to an external monitor and press fn+f8 I receive a normal picture. If an external display works can it still be the GPU?

I have disassembled the LCD unhooked all connections and reconnected. Still receive problems. Maybe the inverter? I'd rather replace inverter or reflow than replace the motherboard.

                    Thank You

If an external display works it is NOT the GPU. Your intermittent blank white screen indicates bad display ribbon or even bad panel electronics, certainly not GPU or inverter. I'd try the display ribbon cable first, it is very fragile and i wouldn't be surprised if it's broken.
