Magnavox 15MF050v/17 Parts

Hi to All
This will be my first post, but being reading for others issues, great site + great feedback from others.
Here's my problem:

The television works fine, but shuts itself off after 15-45 minutes. Often it will not come back on for a minute or so after shutting off. When turned back on, will shut off again more quickly than before.

I have search this site with no luck, but I found this in another site, but I don't like their solution, it may work but I rather replace the parts they have found damage. Here's their link.



Now in this link they mention this parts are being the ones causing this issue. I rather replacing them than installing Heatsinks to them.

1) AIC1084-33CM TO-220 style package voltage regulator (3.3V 5A) at U14.

2) DC-DC converter with TTL ON/OFF control at U12. (a NIKOS N2576S-5 in a 5 pin TO-22O style package 1.5V-27V with a fixed 5V 3A version which this probably is.) Both are on the main circuit board.

I have google in search for where to buy them with no luck.
Can someone guide me in the right Track I'll really appreciated.

Hoo-kay, a bunch of things to cover.

First point - knowing where the person requesting help lives really helps when making recommendations. Recently I recommended Digikey (A USA company) to a gentleman living in Finland. I'm non-discriminatory, but would prefer not to waste time suggesting an unsuitable source.

Second point - since this is a TV, it really should have been in the TVs and video sources section.

Now we get to the actual help. Googling the part number + datasheet gives a lot of hits. Alldatasheet.com has one of the best front ends for actually finding the proper datasheet. For the Nikos part, here is the summary page, clicking on the link bottom center of that page will take you to the datasheet.

Three things pop out. First of all, these are not TO-220 packages, they are actually TO-263 packages. The entire package is usually soldered to the circuit board, and is difficult to remove. Next, the author is correct; this is the 5V fixed output version. And it is pin compatible with the LM2576 series of parts. With that information you should be able to search for replacement parts from a local (or at least in your country) supplier.

The same process should find a datasheet and source for the other part. In each case, feel free to ask us to verify suitability before ordering.

NOW, much as I agree replacing the original parts is the preferred option, do you have the equipment to do it? A 25 (or even 60) watt soldering iron isn't going to work. A hot air gun is the best choice, and that is likely to damage other parts. I suggest adding the heat sinks. Ideally, you will be able to locate some thermal epoxy; I don't have any faith in double-sided tape.

First I posted this on this forum, because this unit is a monitor/TV so I thought it would be right one, and this is the one I visit the most due to searching for my projects which are 8 HP L1955 that I acquired from our Company and maybe 20 more units that eventually will be thrown away by IT department. (Wife mad taking over garage to storage my projects)
This is a hobby I do. Keeps me busy when not busy. I like challenges, I do own a 3 in 1 rework station I used to reflow Xbox360 (4 out of 5 success rate).
This monitor/TV started to go bad for my little girl, about a month ago. I put it aside as a new project. I was just looking for the right info or directions for repair; the heat sink to me was a quick fix. But now thanks to your input, I'll do better.
Again PlainBill thanks for the info it has been very informative. Also I updated profile to show where I'm located. Will bookmark DigiKey for purchases.

One issue on this is the reason for the failure. Was the IC underrated for this application? Was the heat sink area inadequate? Has teh IC been damaged? Was some other component (a cap?) deteriorating and causing the failure?

Given you have a rework station that may be adequate to the task, I certainly would replace the voltage regulator AND add a heat sink.

I'll follow your recomendations will replace the voltage regulator add the heat sink w/termal paste epoxy. This will be my Xbox360 repairs testing tv. Also I didn't notice any bad caps or burn stuff. Well thanks for the homework, PlainBill

Greetings. I was happy to find this thread. I have the same exact problem with my Magnavox 15MF050v/17 --it shuts off after 15 minutes of use. I would very much like to see the page referenced in one of the posts above--the page that talks about installing heat sinks...but that page is gone. The link no longer words. Apparently, that whole blog has been taken down by Verizon.

So, can anyone here help me? I have the ability to install a heat-sink, but I'd benefit by first being able to read instructions or see diagrams. Does anyone have the contact information from the Verizon blog poster (the creator of the linked-to page that no longer exists)? Or would it be possible to correspond with the person who started this thread (jcandel101) regarding what he did to fix his problem? Or can anyone who saw the now-missing page and remembers what it said to do, pass along the instructions on how and where to install the heat-sink to keep my TV from turning itself off? Any of that would all be most helpful and much appreciated. Thanks!

No one responded to my earlier post, not here nor via PM. That's okay though, because I figured it out for myself, based on the above, earlier posts. And now, I wanted to report that my TV works fine now. And so, in case someone else finds themselves here on this dead thread, looking for help, I wanted to post little info about what worked for me.

I bought 2 one-inch pieces of copper pipe, cut them, pounded them flat, bent up the edges (so they are as large as possible without touching anything else nearby) and glued them into place, using thermal epoxy. I'll attach a picture, which I hope may also be helpful. Yes, it's not a pretty repair, but it makes the TV work and that's what matters.
