    Samsung Syncmaster 941BW

I have what seems very common on this board, yet on my board(ip board that is) When I turn the monitor on, the power button turns blue and stays blue. Problem is that when the monitor turns on, the screen lights (very dimly) showing desktop, then 2-3 seconds goes "Black" ....however the monitor detects sleep mode (light blinks) when desktop goes into "standby" after idle time. I bought this on ebay thinking I could dive into and maybe repair a few bad caps thus having a nice monitor. Opening the monitor up its for sure someone has been there done that In the image I upload here today shows that they replaced a few caps with "ELITE" series.. I will place the values here also.

    Elite bottom right red circle is: 1000uF x 16v EL(M) 105' c (C)0416 10mm x 20mm
    Elite Center board red circle is: 470uF x 25v E8(M) 105' c (C)0416 10mm x 17-18mm
now, not sure these are even correct. Anyone might know?

I'm opening to whatever you guys see fit as the pro's'

Elite are probably the original caps. I believe 0416 is 2004 week 16 so the caps are 6 years old.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Odd thing is... on the back of the board in the second photo you can see where someone has been there is how it appeared to me. The board had some residue from flux core solder it seemed. Normally I would have guessed thats where the caps leaked. Unfortunatly those caps dont show any real signs of physical trouble, and the residue I mention on the other side dont seem possible for leakage being the opposite side? The rest of them caps are capxon also.

Odds are your problem is sitting squarely between the two inverter transformers. That green module is a known source of problems on Samsung monitors. You may be able to find some discussion of it in a few threads here.

It's a peripheral issue, but as far as someone replacing the original (failed) Capxons with NOS Elites, my initial reaction is if someone replaced old, worn-out garbage with old, unused garbage they really haven't improved the situation much.

I'm kinda new at this, but a quick learner. PlainBill, since your one of the Holy Grails around here and responding to my post Any chance anyone might tell me what this little green thing is? heheh

I hear ya on that one indeed However thats the only evidence I'm even seeing on this board while I'm still learning. There was a post on a samsung a while back that I once read that you guys had him hit the voltages on pins 1-9 (I tried this the other day, lost my notes darn it....) But when I did this I did note that mine where very similar to that guys in the UK top to bottom with an exception of pins 6,7 and my Largest Cap 1000uF x 450v was at 77-78(vdc) on the 1000 setting of the DMM. This sound like anything? or am I just reaching into my pocket to buy caps too quick? Thanks in advance guys! I really appreaciate all you do here. Especially taking the time to not only read my hard to understand lingo, yet still taking more of your time to answer

Assuming you didn't just bite into an apple (old joke), that 'little green thing' is a hybrid. It's one more way to increase the circuit density. Sometimes it is also one more way to decrease the reliability.

              any suggested replacements perhaps?

what is that in the center called? and how do i get a value of it? zd101 dam near in the center of the board seems to have a split inside? or my eyes messing with me?

It's a zener diode, and that's the way that particular configuration looks.

Unsolder it from the board and see if you can locate the defective component.

PlainBill, isnt it possible to check a capacitor such as the 100uf 450v while its on the board with my DMM? pos-lead to pos / neg-lead to neg. Cause if I can then what I'm seeing instead of it climbing in resistance it hits 13.** on the meter set@20k and goes back to blank in a blink almost (I tried this several times but some times it only holds blank even if I cross the posts attempting to discharge)... seems like I read this some place before and the DMM would try to charge to infinity taking power from the DMM? I'm all ears big guy teach me

Big guy? That better not be a wise crack about my girth!!!!

Yes, you can check a capacitor with a VOM or DMM. However, the charge time is dependent on the resistance range selected. I BELIEVE most DDMs use a constant current source, which should give a constant charge rate. I just tried this with my favorite DMM and a monitor power supply that has been sitting in a bag for a couple of months. With the DMM on the 200k ohm scale, the display counts from 0 to 'out of range' at the rate of about 10 K per second. It climbs at a correspondingly slower rate at the higher ranges.

Kids, if you try this at home, Discharge the cap first!!!

I replaced all capacitors on this board now (including the large one 100uf x 450v)
Now what I'm seeing is the backlight isnt lighting all the way. Seems as though the instance it turns on it says Digital kinda dim, then brightens a touch just before it goes out....then Searching for Analog signal dim, then bright again before it goes out...
I've tried inpluging the lamps cn1,2,3,4 and when I run the monitor without one set (blue/b, pink/b) the lumination is still exactly the same.

A Flashlight reveals the signal searching in the background.
Any Ideas where I might look on this board?
                            Thanks in advance everyone

There are several possibilities. Brightness set low in the menu (unlikely), low voltage to the inverter, or low output from the inverter transformers. I go back to my first statement in post #4 - the green hybrid. I don't recall the context, but that has been implicated in problems. Perhaps if you search for Samsung hybrid in this sub-forum you can locate the threads.

Please recheck this voltage. I think it should be like 160 to 170v dc.

You can't buy that green hybrid IC.

On this board, if replacing all the secondary caps (including the 470uF/25V you have marked) did not solve the problem, I chuck the board aside and move on.

                                    Thanks for the response m8
I'll recheck that voltage on that large cap when I get home with the unit put back together (loaded) I'll run down 1-9 also.
I did replace (All) the caps even the large one. Had some fun on digikey and mouser. You want to here something odd? When ordering some caps for a Gateway fpw2185 (which I did fix with success) at the same time, I found some of the identical caps cheaper back and forth (some not being in stock but less than 50% off from each other!) Soooooo I ordered a shiP-load more heheh... for such a deal on caps I can wait for the spares till july, aug!

If this board does happen to be a junk one ~ I ordered(won) this on ebay "Samsung PWI1904SJ(M), BN44-00121L, McKinley IP Board "

The pinout is diff on the other side , has more pins. What a steal for 6.27 + 6.50 shipping? lol
that should be here by the end of next week. Likely I one can snip the wire not needed or change the plug.
The dimensions of the board are believed to be the same, 4 ccfl outs too. Even the power plug looks to be in the right location when reviewing. Obviously not a direct replacement, but hey

Still hoping for the learning experience on this one though.

Here is a pix of the Hybrid IC. It is soldered thru those headers.
