    ThinkVision LCD issues

I wasn't expecting much as this came from the trash but hey, it's an LCD screen.
Anyways, it's an IBM 6636-AB1 and whenever you send a video signal to it, the front led goes from amber to green, you see the screen flicker (though the backlight does not light) and then the led goes back to amber.
It does this over and over again in three second cycles and all the while I can hear a high pitched squeal coming from the thing.
I would really like to get this working again as it's Sync-on-green compatible and my SGIs only give out a sync-on-green video signal.

    EDIT: Found the problem.
There appear to be swollen Hermei caps on the inverter board (I should of known). Swapping those out should fix it.

        I photographed the whole thing.

The problem now is setting the resolution.
It's max resolution is 1024X768 however on my SGI's They don't like that low of a resolution.
So I went a step up and when running 1280x1024 at 72Hz the desktop looks much better, however a bottom inch of the screen is off the panel and I get a little black window floating over the screen that drives me nuts.

Something really burned the board near J189. What did that?

There's a tantalum cap on the other side (you can see it in the second last photo) that got pretty crispy (however it still works).

              Grrr...
              I can't shut it up.
Is there any way to force the panel to display 1280 x 1024 without that stupid box AND locking out the OSD controls?

I noticed that also. Looks like it's the brown component (the ZD904 zener?) if you look at the picture from the underside of the board. The pictures angle isn't good enough to be sure, but the traces around it doesn't look good either. I junked a 15" Philips LCD a few weeks ago with a similar damage around a really burned resistor, as I didn't find it worth trying to repair.

Edit: so it's a tantalum cap...

Well, at least that's what I have been calling them, for a while now.

                    Re: ThinkVision LCD issues

You can't do anything about that 1024 resolution, keep searchng for 1280 resolutioin that means another monitor.

Save up for a 19" with sync on green. I have known many Samsung models does. all you do is look up the specifications.

                    Cheers, Wizard

No way: as Wizard wrote, it's a 15" monitor which matrix has a 1024x768 resolution. Quite strange you can't force that resolution: the card in your SGI does support 1024x768 60Hz, doesn't it?

Yes, the ELAN (GR2) graphics set in my Indigo can easily handle 60Hz as well as a bunch of others. The problem is however is that most SGI's are designed for 1280x1024 and while they can display smaller resolutions, things start to get really cramped.
