• Re: Swapping out a NiMh for a LiPo?

The duty cycle for an emergency light is way different from a cordless phone. Typically there are three discharges these batteries experience; self discharge, testing and loss of mains power.

How often you discharge/test the emergency lights, should be set by assessing the consequences of a fixture failure between the tests (risk management), not to optimize battery life. Typically somewhere between quarterly and monthly is normal.

The code here is that emergency lights shall be connected to the local general light...

^ If you are referring to legal regulations, in most of Europe, this modification would probably break the regulations regardless, unless it was approved by whoever issued the fixtures EN 60598-2-22 compliance papers. I'm a Technical Property Manager in my professional life. Since the OP is based in the US, I don't know.

About voltage drop, if the fixtures are to be used for anything where legal code requirements apply, you need to be sure that the new battery type maintain the voltage needed during discharge/usage time. NiCd maintain their full voltage during discharge until they are nearly depleted. Other batteries might have a different voltage drop curve, so unless the fixture is designed to take that in to account, you might find that the light cut out before the fixtures rated time, even with a new battery.

Yea, sure, that solves the problem for the OP, and all others with Lexmark driver problem. Your solution should be made a sticky....

Are you continuing using them as emergency fixtures? If yes, I wouldn't bother changing battery technology. In my experience, NiCd does not have a lower life span than other, "newer" type batteries in this application. From my observations, NiCd might be somewhat better in this application.

Remember, emergency fixtures should be regularly run down to their hourly rated running time to test the battery capacity....

Did you try the 2017-version on the Lexmark site?

OS-wise, you are correct. There used to be some SSD-manufacturers that had some trim-like features in their firmware. OCZ (Vertex?) comes to mind for some reason. Don't know if any manufacturers cares about that now days. There also used to be utilities that one could run to perform manual trim, or schedule periodic trim. Don't know if that's around any more either. Hence tricky. ...

Well, there are 'unofficial' rollups. Goggle 'Windows XP SP4'. There also are complete installs with all updates slipstreamed into them. One of them are called Windows XP Professional SP3 x86 - Integral Edition.

Have not used them, and don't know if they can be trusted.

Edit: SSD Trim can be a bit tricky on XP....

• Re: The 2020 Operating System Thread

I converted all my own and my families computers from whatever version that was compatible and eligible before the official free Win10 upgrade date. Being my family main (remote) support person, I can say that support due to problems with Win10 and/or updates has become none-existent. A few user errors happens, but that isn't the OS' fault.

Since my employer, in Norway at least, upgraded to Win10 a year ago I'm happy my informal role as my departments support person has also almost dwindled away.

Being a Windows...

Just because the light comes on on the switch, doesn't mean that you got good power or ground. If you're lucky, you could have a (partially) blown fuse. It's an easy fix if you're lucky. You can have a bad connection, i.e. corrosion (the green crusty) on the hot side or the ground side. Not always easy to diagnose; the connection could be good enough for showing voltage on a multimeter or test light, but not carrying enough current to drive the motors. Any 55W halogen headlight test bulb might be helpful here.

My advice would...

Weird. You might need some kind of hardware inventory analyser.

One comes with Windows. Win+r and run msinfo32. Look under Components, and Input or possibly Problem Devices and see what you find.

RWEverything access hardware directly. Under SMBios there usually are a Built-in pointing device entry. Anything making any sense?

Otherwise you might want to try some other utility. A few like HWinfo and Sandra I've used...

Might be an Elan touchpad. Try this combo Synaptics & Elan package, should work for W7 also.

So am I, but I selected the Spyboot program, as they are well known for their other garbage clean-up software. The program can also do some tweaks that normally are only available in the Enterprise-version.

If such a company cannot be trusted, on par with other well known software manufacturers, you would be best advised to stay away from most readily available software. You would then be best advised to use open source code, examining the code and compile it yourself. That is, if you got a trustworthy compiler.

There are guides out there for what to disable manually, but its cumbersome. I prefer to use a tool that gives me the controls speedier at one place. This page gives a list of some tools. Personally I've used the Spyboot one for some of my own stuff, without any problems. As always with these kind of tools, use with care. At least create a restore point before making changes. And it would be unwise to use more than one of the tools on the same PC.Re: I'm getting windows

I had to skip some of the more windy posts above, as it was not to clear if any of it was relevant.

My answer are based on following statements from OP as I understand them:
- Network printing is possible, but results are somewhat mixed
- Printing directly by USB works correctly

From this, I doubt the printer driver is faulty. My guess is that the prints gets corrupted either when passed through the OS network print or by the USR5461 print server.

The setup procedure is found...

• Re: New SSD vs. "New" Laptop

Having just a couple of weeks ago bought a E5470, that you are considering, intended as replacement for the E4310 that I also have owned for six years, a few observations might be of use for you.

- the E5470 got a chiclet keyboard. Some hate them. I'm still undecided, but I'm probably OK with it. I don't type a lot on this PC anyway. It supposedly is a lot more spill and dust resistant, that might be handy for some.

- storage expandability on the E5470 are badly documented. The BIOS got support for 3 SATA and one...

Forced to stand by my words? My only claim from the start has been that it is not usually not hard to move a software RAID. I have not solicited people, not even you, to use any kind of storage solution. You on the other hand has repeatedly and boringly droned on about your magnificent shelf stores, under ways making several incompetent claims about ZFS. Then you are trying to draw me out on "designing" a storage system, despite I clearly has stated before that your data, your problem, not interested. Then you want information...
