So I have a Acer Aspire 5740-5749 that had been given to me to fix.
The screen appeared blank when i turned it on and therefore I assumed that it was a bad screen.
Well after replacing the screen, the issues was the same, only this time I noticed that there was a picture, but it was extremely dim. I didn't know what to make of it, but assumed that it was a bad Ribbon Cable. (I would like to add that the computer works perfectly when attached to an external display.)
Well I replaced the cable and nothing has changed. The screen is there, but incredibly dark.
After some research I came to the conclusion that it was a bad inverter...only to learn that LED displays do not have inverters, instead the backlight is powered by a fuse located on the motherboard.
This started to make some sense to me because the person who owns the laptop said that they did not drop the machine, but that it wouldn't charge. The cable that they gave to me was covered in electrical tape and clearly was the cause of the issue.
So with all that taken into consideration I figure that the cable shorted the fuse which caused the backlight to no longer receive power.
My question now is how to go about locating the fuse on the board so that I can either replace it or add some solder to fix the issues. Also a recommendation of how to go about repairing the broken fuse once it has been located, getting a new fuse vs fixing it with solder, and how that would be done. I'm not too familiar with a multimeter but I do have access to one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
