    Denon AVR-S740H thermal shutdown help

The culprit - A new to me Denon AVR-S740H. Protection history shows 60 instances of thermal detector (A) shutdown.

Powering it up for a few minutes and it gets noticeably warm on the bottom of the case where the +12, -12, +5 voltage regulators are. After 20 minutes I would call it hot, and approaching too hot to keep your hand on that part of the case. So the thermal detection is doing its job and not tripping erroneously.

The heat is clearly coming from the small voltage regulators that use the case as a heat sink. It has a bridge rectifier that converts the AC from the transformer to DC, and then the 7812, 7912, and 7805 voltage regulators. A picture of it is below

The manual shows this setup as drawing a maximum of 602 mA.

    https://www.manualslib.com/manual/14...page=40#manual

I've tested the amperage on each voltage as it leaves the board and powers the system. Everything checks, with the highest draw being 250 mA on the +12v side. All of the regulators test fine with the diode test but I swapped the 7812 anyway since that seems to be where the heat is coming from.

I'm stumped. With no load there is no heat is generated so I don't suspect a short on the board. With a load, the max draw I can see is well below the design limit and in no way enough to put out that much heat. What am I missing here?

Check the input voltage. If it is too high, those regulators have to dissipate it somewhere.

Thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't checked that. 15.23 volts, so I don't think thats the problem but at least its ruling things out.

What about ripples on the input? I guess if the input voltage is not smoothed/filtered enough, it might also cause excess heat..

I don't have an oscilloscope, but when I tested the ac voltage coming from the transformer it was rock steady. Would that be caused by bad caps on the voltage regulator board, after its been rectified to DC?

ThinkPad W530 - faulty CPU regulators?
            by yuii
            Hello
I've got two W530 boards, one with K1000M and one with K2000M graphics card. The first one had an issue of turning off under heavy CPU load after about 30 minutes or in idle. GPU load wasn't causing it to shut down. Trying to turn it back on would only make the power LED to come up for about 2 seconds without fan spin or thinklight flash, and that's it. It also wasn't charging the battery after it died.
Gently pressing the laptop in left upper corner would fix this problem for a couple of days.
The latter is completely dead and has the same 2-second power blink, nevermind...

            A1466 820-00165 intermittent shutdown
            by cruiser_
            hi there,

Got this macbook after liquid damage. Nothing major, cleaned and reflowed what was suspect. Now, the laptop turns on and boots up but shuts off intermittently - sometimes after a few minutes, sometimes after a few hours.
Can be immediately started from keyboard right after. Plug stays orange during this time. No battery.

            Gives shutdown cause -128.

Seem to work fine in SMC bypass.

Same shutdown happens with disconnected TP/KB/KBLED/CAM.

            Observations:
            - SMC_RESET_L - when pulled down - plug goes orange/green and...

Mounting and Handling Guidelines for TO220 TO220F TO247 Cases / Packages

The TO220, TO220F and TO247 are the popular packages for power devices because of their versatility and ability to dissipate moderate amounts of heat. This application note describes the basic guidelines for handling power MOSFETs in TO220, TO220 and TO247 packages shown in Figure 1. Please note that only mechanical and soldering guidelines are covered here. Additional precautions are required for isolating high voltage rated devices to meet safety regulations.

detecting heat with IR LED receiver

I have some dark IR led, and want to know if it is be situable to detect pure heat (not visable glow ir radiation) in well lighted desk?

So, if I put hand over it in near distance like few centimeters, that detect rising heat, not covering it from light.
Something like termal camera, but in one spot, any simple circuit?...

            Moto G84 short after heat
            by ludovik
            Hello everyone,
i was reballing the power manger of a moto g84, after applying heat i tried to power on and it wouldn’t.
i injected 1.5v to some capacitor that seem in short because both side beep if tested.
            when i inject i feel the cpu burning;
since the cpu is exactly on the other side of the board, is that possible that the heat from the reballing damaged the cpu? do you know where i can find schematics or what can i do?
i know this is not enough to explain the situation so if you need any other info ask me please!
Thank you very much in advance
