    Infinity PS12 subwoofer (caps)

I have a Inifinity PS12 subwoofer, The caps went bad on it, I found out by taking out the amp and found the caps burned off and One fell off. I think it has 2 caps

dont know much on these but it reads: elytone 6.8uf+10% ... 100v np

If some1 can LINK me some caps for that also I would appreciate it.

Im looking at Soldering Gun's on amazon. what else do I need ??

went to Digikey, don't really understand the terminology, i got some of it, but couldn't figure out the rest.

First off, please take some clear and focus pictures of your board and of the dead capacitors.

Then take a measurement of the diameter of the capacitor.

Also, you don't really want a soldering "gun" for recapping and working on more delicate hardware. How much were you planning on spending on this soldering gun? Try this instead: http://www.amazon.com/Weller-SP23LK-.../dp/B0009ZD2AG.

If you think you might want to get into electronics, try a Weller WLC100. If not the iron I linked above should suffice.

You also want some solder wick like this: http://www.amazon.com/Fine-Braid-Sol...2742380&sr=1-1

You use this to remove solder from the board. You can google on how to use it. It's very easy to use.

First priority is to get some pictures up.

I've been reading some bad reviews on that PS12. Seems to burn boards just out of warranty period. I wasn't suprised to see it here.

        Re: Infinity PS12 subwoofer (caps)

        Hi all,

Hope reviving this thread is preferable to starting a new one since my problem relates to the same issue and series of subwoofer (in my case Infinity PS410). Also my first post to the forum. Glad to be here and eager to learn. Photographer by day, emerging electronics hobbyist by night. I successfully replaced bad caps in my Samsung flatscreen TV about two years ago which I considered a huge personal victory, and I have some basic knowledge but still very new to all of this. Appreciate your patience.

My Infinity PS410 sub is doing the "rapid flickering between red and green" thing on the LED, which from what I've read in this thread indicates bad caps. This happened two years ago and Infinity replaced the sub under warranty but it's happening again with the new one now (two years later). I opened it up and am not sure what to make of what I see on the board. It looks like one of the large 80V caps has possibly damaged some downstream components. I see that the four resistors, a transistor, and a smaller cap nearby all appear to have scorch marks on the board. I have a line-level signal going into the sub from the dedicated sub output of the A/V receiver. I'm definitely not overdriving it and have clean power going to it.

When this happened to my TV, the caps were of course smaller and very obviously bulging with no damage to the board. In this case I'm not sure what to make of it as I don't see any bulging or leaking fluid on the caps; just the burn marks. Is it worth trying to repair? Infinity said they would cover the part if I took it to the shop (at $85 labor charge). I'm just not sure which components have been fried and whether or not the scorching on the board has affected any of the connections.

I've attached pics of the issue and appreciate your help!

Sorry, just realized I posted in a different thread than I'd meant to and I can't figure out how to just delete this one. Sorry.

I was referring to this other thread: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showth...nfinity&page=5
