    Eldom RH15W (CW 1500) ,help to define a destroyed component

    hi to all
    these pictures are from an electrical heater
    can you understand what component was before damaged ;
    maby its a triac and the reason that causes this result is bad resistor ;

    what are N & H connected to?
    a triac makes sense if it's AC

      Did you for the missing piece (that may have had a number) in the case where the board was installed? as mentioned it is likely a triac, you just need to rate it for whatever it is controlling.

        Post the make and model, instead of wasting our time with a picture of a burnt, dead part!

        The triac is dead due to an overload. It should have had a heatsink as well.

            without a heatsink a triac wont handle more than maybe 20w
            what did it have?

              Re: Eldom RH15W (CW 1500) ,help to define a destroyed component

              ELDOM appears to be a Bulgarian appliance manufacturer for central and south eastern Europe.

              It's a wall convector panel heater 1,500W with electronic thermostat.
              I'm guessing the triac controls the heater? (there is no fan here)
              The heating element must have shorted out or to a ground-fault. The triac is badly cooked and... a new one would cook too.
              230VAC at 1,500W is 6.5A so the triac must have a heatsink.
              WHERE IS THE HEATSINK?

              Looks like a TO-220 insolated tab, 4-quadrant sensitive gate triac.
              But first measure the heater resistance and check to GND as well.

                sir i agree with you
                no there is not heatsink
                so what do you suggest to me to use ;
                a triac 12a or 16 a to last longer I mean with a plastic base or metal base
                and i will check of cource and the resistance

                  metal tab that is ISOLATED from the center pin - or the whole heatsink could be live.
                  if you cant get isolated ones then use an insulating kit.
                  heatsink depends on the case - it has to be able to fit back together.

                      Does this heater unit have a relay inside? It would explain something.

                      For long life switching, some heaters use a triac+relay to switch power to the heater.
                      The triac turns on first then is quickly shorted out by the relay which then carries all the heater current. So the triac does the initial switching (needs no heatsink) and the relay does the holding.

                        The damaged side of the to220 component seems to be the tab side, are there no numbers on the other side?

                          A new triac would just burn up like the old one... the problem has not yet been found.
                          If there's a relay, it has failed allowing the triac to burn up.
                          Or the heater coil is broken/shorted - but there must be a heatsink that fell off along with the tab or something. 6.5W with no heatsink is almost 400°C for the triac and we see what that looks like.

                          The PC board is carbonized, I don't think the triac can just be replaced without rework. A vanilla triac like BTA12-600 with isolated tab could work.

                          Unless there is a PSU problem the Samwha capacitors went bad?

                            so i can use a bta12 or 16 without heatsink
                            but first i must find why it doesnt light

                              Uh NO you need a heatsink and it must have burned and fell off somewhere, or there is a relay helping with the switching.
                              Post more pictures of the board. Test the heating element resistance.

                                Anyone is familiar with a TRIAC circuit?

                                I came across this schematic, and I built it, but I can't seem to figure it out why I'm getting a low AC voltage output at the TRIAC terminals.

                                With 230V AC hot side at the TRIAC MT2, I measured 60V AC between MT1 and neutral side when the comparator output LED indicator is on, and 20V AC when it is off.

                                Same result if 230V AC hot side is at MT1, and I measured between MT2 and neutral side.

                                My heating element doesn't work with 60V AC. It's not even getting hot and the thermocouple amplifier output is a...
