    Cap-less VRM?

Just came across this curiosity from asus: Crosshair with VRM 'EL cap-less design'. Wonder how they managed that?

    On a side note:

Only took them a decade or so to figure that out....though you'll have to pay $229.99 for that little innovation.

Unfortunately it seems mobo manufacturers will take advantage of cheap caps if they can get away w/ it for a few years (especially if they can market 'all solid caps'). The sad thing is they probably could put decent electrolytics in there for the price of those solids, I suspect.

Fortunately my a8n-sli premium didn't suffer the same fate, and it was only $175 back in '05; really have to wonder how much of this is ignorance on the part of the mfg vs profiteering.

It seems that a lot of old dell motherboards had a capless design. My optiplex has no caps, my poweredge only has 2 or 3 tiny solid caps. I can't find the VRM's on the motherboard either.

They're not capless, they're EL capless, meaning electrolytic.. They've got to have something there, either MLCC or SMT tantalum, etc.. I've seen two motherboards that lack electrolytic caps, but have something else, the Slot 1 Dell GX110 motherboard, and an old slot A motherboard from a Gateway..
