    Newbie with a question...

General question here, not sure if this is the spot for it. I have been in the electronics business for quite some time, although mostly mobile electronics, and a few years ago I really started getting into repairing more consumer electronics. My question is regarding LCD's and Plasma, why hasn't someone come up with a "universal" screen replacement part yet? I'm sure EVERYONE has thought about it. When I was heavy into car audio I could buy a "smart harness" that would attach to whatever brand radio I had and factory matched to whatever vehicle I was doing.

I can't believe that we can do all that we are doing in the industry and we can't make some universal panels and brand/part matched connectors. I am sure it would be an engineering and logistical nightmare, but I'm very sure it would be a pretty profitable business. So, a few EDUCATED reasons why it could not be accomplished? (other than the TV manufactures would freak because sales of new TVs being purchased due to the Wii remote being thrown at the screen would come to a halt). As I said I'm kinda new but don't be afraid to hit me with some electronics lingo, I'll figure it out!

They're waiting to consolidate to a monopoly, so all screens can be bought from the same company and you won't have to worry about compatibility issues any longer...

That is right, people want to have their own special advantage and then lock in the user to their own panels. Having any panel be replaceable by any other manufacturer forces the panel makers to compete by price and only helps end user repair. Manufacturers are looking only to profit themselves.

This is no different than the AMD/Intel issue that has even diverged today... Until everyone can make these things, they only want to differentiate and try to cause more lock in.
