    LONDON - Scientists at Tel Aviv University have developed and patented a nanobattery technology for fast charge/discharge batteries that they claim could provide an alternative source of power for mobile devices while eliminating fire hazards associated with current lithium-based batteries.

    The university's technology transfer arm, Ramot, is actively seeking industrial partners to license and commercialize the nanobattery technology.

    I'm always concerned about any new power technology, what happens to the millions of them when they're done.
    My Large box of crusty old dead nicads goes to RadioShack twice a year, where I'm told we will dispose of this. What does that mean? The stuff will not end up in anyones water? It will not go up some horrable smoke stack?
    Don't get me wrong I love power cells, but they are scary.

      NiCad's are exceptionally nasty, I work in a chemistry lab where one of the projects is a compound that Chelates heavy soft metals like Ni, Cd, Pd and Hg. It works great, but to see some of the really poluted ground waters tested with it always worries me. Unfortunately, due to the nature of our design it is hard to characterize what we chelate out, without testing the water seperately. Oh well. Lithium atleast is better, it's reactive but less so than say Na or K or on down. It also isn't nearly as toxic as those others.
