    The DIY Home Automation/Security System

The title says it all. ^

Anyhow, I plan to make my own security system in my room. It will also have
    closet ("server room") temperature monitoring.
And of course an online interface I can get to from my phone :P
All centered on my asus eee pc 900hd netbook... (or, if need be, my IBM THinkpad X31, but since i sometimes take that places I would rather use the netbook)...
Think I could pull this off?
I'm probably going to have to create some custom circuitry for the sensors, etc for security stuff, that's fine.

I'm assuming you want some kind of buzzer or alarm to go off when someone enters your room. If that is the case, I think (could be wrong, though) that you could pul that part off with some LED pointers and CDS Cells (a CDS Cell is a resistor that changes its resistance according to how much light it gets). I was thinking that you could use the CDS Cell to turn on a power supply which would power a buzzer or something like that.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

But how do I report that to a computer
Other then that, a CDS cell should work!

ah, I didn't realise you wanted it recorded on a computer. That's beyond me. You'd probably have to write some software that records it.

OK. What language should I use?
I think I'm getting ahead of myself here...first I'll make the hardware. Then the software.
          :-)

Are you sure a dinky little netbook is sturdy and permanent enough for this? If your mom comes in to clean your room and shuts the lid then your whole "security system" just went offline.

Sounds like you need an older desktop that is suited for quiet 24/7 service. Might as well make it a home fileserver too.

Well I've got a Windows 2008 Server machine I could use that is currently my Minecraft/Web server. It's already a bit overloaded (runs out of RAM since I'ev only got 2 gigs in there) but I guess this won't be very intensive so I'll use that.
I guess I can also use my Windows XP Dell Dimension 4600. It's on 24/7 for folding@home and doesn't do anything else.
Anyway, I'm much more interested in the hardware side of things right now. Fersure I've got plenty of comptuers I could use!
