Sorry to sound like a n00bie

What are the differences between a MOSFET and a capacitor. The purpose of function?

MOSFET's supply power by reducing voltages. Capacitors smooth that power out and hold a small reserve for burst power usage.
    Ludicrous gibs!

Hmmmm ... MOSFETs can be used as amplifiers or switches. As an amplifier, a relative small signal controls a larger voltage or current. As a switch, the control voltage turns on or off a larger voltage or current. In the context of a VRM, the MOSFET is a switch that chops V(In), producing a square wave, which is rectified and filtered into a lower DC voltage. Controlling the duty cycle [T(On)/T(square wave)] controls the output voltage.

A capacitor is used to store energy and filter (smooth) a DC voltage. In a VRM the capacitor helps filter the square wave into DC, and handles current transients.

BTW, no need to apologize for "basic" electronics Qs. We all start with the basics at some point in our lives.

MOSFETs and JFETs (Junction FET) are voltage controlled devices, in which the gate current (other than charging gate capacitance) is tiny or less. Bi-polar transistors are current controlled devices, with the base curent, depending on the device, ranging from u-Amps to Amperes.

what i went through dealing with my mobo with dead onboard sound!
                by ChaosLegionnaire
so i took out one of my spare gigabyte ep35-ds3r mobos from storage for use to do some cpu, ram and video card testing of stuff i bought from ebay and got for free from momaka. he bought 50 e8400 cpus for cheap from ebay some years ago and i decided to help him relieve him of some of his supply since he had waaaay too many!! what did we say about hoarding too much stuff and depriving others of them?! *cough* socialism *cough* lol!

i had to blow some dust off the board and heatsinks with the datavac as i didnt clean it up before putting it in storage. after finishing...
