iPod nano does absolutely nothing. Anyone know anything about them?

I was given an iPod Nano v1 with a cracked screen...

I bought a USB cable and plugged it in, part of the LCD turned black which went away a few seconds after unplugging. The computer didn't detect it. Not even Linux showed errors etc in dmesg.

I figured the screen was trying to display something but couldn't, so I ordered a new screen and installed it today.

Now when I plug it in, absolutely nothing happens, and it's still not detected by the computer.

Reading on Apple's website etc I tried flipping the hold button on and off, holding select and menu for a reset, and leaving it plugged in for half an hour or so to see if anything would happen...

I noticed that the datestamp on the battery suggests it was manufactured in 2005, being LiPo I expect it's pretty past it's lifespan by now.

Now I'm wondering if the battery is shot, and if so, could it cause this no-response problem?

Yes. Measure the voltage at the battery. If it's less than 3.5v, take the battery out of the ipod and connect a 5v supply to it in series with a 10 ohm resistor or thereabouts. Monitor the voltage at all times, you don't want to overcharge it by any chance or it'll bulge and it may even do things like catch fire or explode. Once it's past 3.8v disconnect it and put it back into the ipod. Should work.

On first measurement (in-circuit) the battery voltage was 3.17v

When the iPod was plugged into the USB, it started at 3.38v and rose steadily... I measured 3.39, 3.40, 3.41 over about 10 seconds but it's hard to keep the probes on so I stopped there.

After unplugging, the voltage started dropping, to about 2.95v (or maybe less, I stopped measuring again)

After a couple of seconds I re-measured to find the voltage slowly climbing back to 3.17v by itself.

Tempted to try your charging method, but not sure if I want to risk it.. I've seen videos of LiPo batteries getting overcharged, not something I want to have happen on my table

It won't blow up if you're careful. Besides, all of them have charging and protection circuits. In those videos the circuits were bypassed, that's why the cells exploded. I have had lithium batteries swell and leak but i haven't had one explode yet.

With the voltages that you had there, i don't think it's the battery tho.

Maybe I should hook the iPod up to an adjustable supply and give it 3.7v, see if it does anything then...

Or is that likely to cause damage somehow?

No. At worst... it won't do anything.
