Re: Aluminum caps
For SMD caps, apply flux to each pad. Mix a small amount of 63/37 solder in with the existing solder on the pads. Do it quickly and the flux will leave smooth mounds. With the lead solder mixed in the melting point will be much lower and your soldering iron will be able to heat each end as you push the cap down without burning the cap up. Clean the flux with swabs and alcohol or brake cleaner. The cap won't attach as strong as the original solder work but this simple technique works for me.
If you have two soldering irons and two people, one person heats the two sides and the other person pushes the cap in. That will result in very strong solder joints and some burned fingers.Last edited by severach; 02-19-2011, 02:03 AM.

Re: Aluminum caps
I would try what I saw on a Youtube video...
Apply flux then tack one side of the capacitor with a tinned iron tip, then solder the other side by laying solder 75% the way across the pad and bringing the iron tip in, then back out after the solder has flowed (chisel tip works best)
Repeat with the other joint, clean off flux.. here's the video anyway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IqJdJEMUOE"Tantalum for the brave, Solid Aluminium for the wise, Wet Electrolytic for the adventurous"
