Here's the thing, fixing it will take 2x the time to reinstall. You don't know what ad/mal/etcware these guys pulled down. In the time it takes to clean and verify you could reinstall and restore from backup. Even if you do clean and verify, you don't know what damage was done. You may be reinstalling down the road anyway.

I used to try to remove the viruses that customers brought me, but they advanced to the point where there was always something that the AV's would miss. When I say AV, I'm not just talking about antivirus programs, but the plethora of tools that the average technician might install on an infected PC, like MalwareBytes, MBAR, TDS Killer, etc, etc.

Last time I actually tried cleaning a PC instead of just formatting, it took me a good three days and when I gave it back, the girl gave it back the next day. It had that blasted TDS rootkit in it. I just said screw it. I backed up her data, formatted, reinstalled, updated Windows, installed Adobe Reader, Chrome, drivers, etc and was done. That took not even a full day to do.

Now, whenever I get an infected computer, I don't take the chance. Some of those buggers aren't meant to be detected so easy like. If you're computer's infected, and the infection is just monitoring your web traffic, waiting for you to login into a bank or something, or maybe downloading illegal child porn to share with other pedophiles, I doubt most people would know.

I gotta agree with Goontron on this one Keeney! Once you've confirmed you're infected, format and reinstall. If you get stuck, we can help walk ya through it.

I haven't attempted to 'clean' an infected system in over a decade. On the rare occasion I even accept that type of repair, its backup & format only.

For me, it's around a decade or so I'd say. I'm trying to move away from the PC repairs all together, unless it's something unique. It got old backing up data, formatting, reinstalling.

I found this site and started learning (albeit very slowly) how to repair electronics (mainly TVs) and have had a ball. I'd hate to think about what I'd be doing now if it wasn't for BadCaps.

I really want to get back into making my own PCBs. Too bad there wasn't some small thread where people could post practice projects for people to do, and they could help people learn the various things. I guess that wouldn't have so much to do with bad capacitors though as it would electronic engineering.

So this is what I have found out over the last 8 hours. Because I had a virus a while back and I used the old programs on a cloned disk it would not detect that Windows 10 was installed at one time. So I could pay them $119 to install it. Which is not going to happen. After going to the intel site it did not have my processor listed as supported by windows 10, but they say that may not matter on earlier models if I could run widows advisory upgrade. Wish I did and it can back as the Intel security chip is not supported even though I disabled it in the bios. So I went to Lenovo to load all the updates they had and when they detected my system It said I had a Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. If I go to the System properties it says I have a Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit. So I guess the original certified Microsoft Refurbishers must of had a licence for a 32 bit and they put a 64 bit program on. I am not going to worry about straightening this out as it does not matter anyway because I am unable to get Windows 10 and that is alright. I was just doing it because someone on the microsoft community figured out how to put the old MS Games on 10 and I thought that it might be more compatible with the rest on the internet making it run smoother. I guess that does not matter to all parties involved.

If you care, my friend had to redo his Windows 10 machine. He nuked the hard drive using Derek's Boot and Nuke. He originally upgraded to 10 from 7 during the free installation. Anyway, after erasing everything on his hard drive, he went to install Windows 10.

By default, if you have a ethernet cable or your PC is hooked up to the internet somehow during the installation, it should auto-detect that your PC was registered for the "free" upgrade and you shouldn't need a key and you shouldn't have to activate. You just install 10 and away you go.

For him though, it kept prompting for a product key. I gave him the product key that every 64-bit Windows 10 Home user gets when they do the free upgrade and he typed it in. Sure enough, it activated with a digital license.

If you'd like to try that, I can give you the same product key. It's not illegal or anything. You can download the Windows 10 64-bit installation media directly from Microsoft's website. I can gave you their program to download the ISO if you'd like as well.

So I have a windows pro. This was a business machine before it was refurbished. I am downloading the iso. Guess I am a glutton for punishment. The program would not detect my flash drive, but will download the iso. It says on can burn it to a dvd.

I just want to make sure I understand.

You where running Windows 7 Pro and at one time, went for the free upgrade to 10 Pro, right?

Here's the product key. It's a generic product key, so you're more than welcome to share it. It should only work if the PC went for the free upgrade at any point in time. They only had to go with the free upgrade once. It doesn't matter if they formatted their hard drive or what since then.

Remember, try to have your ethernet cable plugged in when you're installing 10. It should connect to the Microsoft servers and verify that your PC went for the free upgrade. As soon as you did the free upgrade, it should have registered your PC with the Microsoft Servers, so anytime you need to reinstall 10, it should auto-active.

Try that product key and let me know if it works. I haven't had the chance to try the 10 Pro key, because every customer I run across has 10 Home Edition (if they have 10).

Once it's installed, verify that it's activated (click on the start menu and type Check activation status and then click the one that says something like Check Windows Activation Status) to verify that it's activated.

After that, we can work on checking if all the drivers are there. Even if it looks like they're all there, some might not be. Graphics, SATA controller, and maybe the network / wireless network interface cards might have to be installed (but probably not NICs / Wireless NICs)

Thanks Spork. I did not need the product key after all. This is how it is done. First one downloads the windows.iso from

Then you will need Rufus download

You will need a USB flash drive

Open Rufus and were you see a little disk you want to click on and change to the iso
That then will load to the USB.

Go to your Bios and make the USB HD number #one boot

Restart machine

The machine will come up with the old Window 7 program.

Go to the USB and click on the setup.exe

This loads the Windows 10 but make sure you select do not update at this time when the Widows 10 screen comes up.

The program will load and then later on when the Windows10 boots up it will update with no problem.

That is how it is done.

I do not know if the below was necessary or not.

On my machine I had to disabled the security chip.
I also had to disable the Intel ATM
Both are done in the Bios
Once the Intel ATM is disabled it has to reconfigure the machine as it boots up.

What product support?
With all that said I like Windows 10 and now I am going to lad the old games.

Installing via the thumb drive is an option as well. Generally, just burning a disk, to me, seems easier. You had your ethernet cable hooked up when you went to install, right?

Make sure that you verify that the computer is activated (click on Start -> type Check Windows Activation Status -> Click on Check the Status of Windows Activation or whatever it is).

If it's not activated, it's no good.

By default, you shouldn't need to type the product key. The Windows setup program should connect to the internet and verify that your PC has already obtained a legal copy of 10 and just install it. However, this sometimes doesn't seem to work and a product key, during those times, seems to be necessary.

Also, make sure to run Windows Update now that you have 10 installed. When you downloaded the ISO, it should have downloaded a more up-to-date version of 10 (they update the ISO with security updates) so hopefully, there won't be too many updates that need installing.

No it was connected to a wireless modem . Modem connected to broadband cable. Yea I will check if it is active. I think it is because when I booted up the iso, which one needs 4 GB flash drive, it returned my screen to Interconnect the company I bought the computer from in Seattle. They are the Microsoft Certified Refurbisher. This was the archive file ISO. The other Files to download direct did not offer the option to not update. As I said once the 10 was installed the computer updated quickly around 10 minutes. If I selected to update first then it asked for the license and had an option to one previously installed. I kind of think that Microsoft previously installed license program is a mess. I really like this 10 with the old games.

Good to go. Maybe save those product keys or bookmark this thread just in case you ever need to reinstall again and it doesn't take. My friend, he has reinstalled 10 before, but for some reason, this time, it wouldn't install without him typing the product key manually.

He says he did everything the same, but I dunno. I guess there could have been a problem with the 10 servers.

When I reinstall 10 on a customer's PC, I always have it hardwired. I feel there's a greater chance of the drivers for the NIC (Network Interface Card) being on the 10 disc / thumb drive, then there is for the Wireless network card. I honestly can't think of any time I installed 10 and it didn't automatically have the drivers for NIC. I'm not too certain about the drivers for the wireless though.

Now that you have 10 installed and you've verified it's activated, did you go through and do the Windows updates? If not, you should do that, but first, go into the Windows Update Settings (click Start and type Windows Update Settings and then click it). Go to Advanced Options. Make sure, "Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows." is checked. After that, check for updates.

Finally, go into Device Manager (hold down the Window Key and R and then type devmgmt.msc).

Check for any devices that are automatically expanded. If there's any, you need some drivers. Tell me what they are and we'll help you find them.

If there's no, in Device Manager, double click on Display Adapters. Make sure it doesn't say something like Generic Display Adapter. It might say something like, AMD Mobility Radeon or Intel or something like that. If it says Generic, let me know.

Finally, double click on IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in Device Manager. Tell me what it says. We don't want it to say something like Standard SATA Controller. If it does, it's just using the Generic drivers (just like the video card, if Display Adapters shows Generic) and we'll need to install the drivers. If it's using the generic drivers, you won't get the full benefits of the hard drive.

I am now trying to clone Widows 10 to my USB drive so I can boot from that drive. So if something goes wrong with the program on the internal drive I will get the old drive out and clone it to the internal drive. I have Acronis 2013 and that is not compatible. They want $20 for the 2016 which I just might buy as I put a bunk bed together today you a neighbor and she gave me some money. I told her to keep it, but she said she will never ask me to do anything again if I did not take it.
The thing is that the Widows 10 updated itself after I installed. It did this automatically. I will check the update an will look at the device manager. Everything seems to be working fine. Printer scan and smart fax works fine. There is also a recovery partition that Windows put on the disk. I used Todo to Clone the disk and will check if it is booting up on the USB.
