I did the SLI just because I had a box full of those cards that I polymodded. That system is in my other work room under the bench. I do flick the monitor on every now and then...but no, I don't use it for anything beyond its file serving, backup, and some other network services. That machine is a freight train, you just can't stop it. there's 6 HDD's in it now, the 160gb pair shown in the pics, for the OS. Then there's 4x 1TB WD RE's in there, in 2x 1tb mirrors. One of those arrays is dedicated to nothing but my MP3 stash.

Except for the hardware RAID configuration mine is a little more powerful. But it's interesting to see that PIII machines are still in use...

no, it is a whole 'nother project... if it were a new server, the agp requirement wouldn't have existed. the PIII will live on!

A side note, I tacked a webcam to the wall, installed the Logitech software, set it to record to my server hard drive, enable automatic motion sensing, pasted a SMILE YOU'RE ON CAMERA sign on my door, and now I've got a cheap surveillance system

A few issues:
1. I hardly ever wear shorts.
2. Why would they be on the wall?
3. It's not my mom I'm worried about. Just people breaking in when I'm gone for a week (which would be unlikely because I never travel)...
Then again, I might be going to AU eventually, so it would be useful...

smb is short for Samba, which is the protocol used by windows sharing... think of it like you think of tcp, udp etc ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Server_Message_Block

Windows sharing is the simplest but not necessarily the fastest method of transferring files - ftp would usually do better at large transfers but with your "server" configuration, it would really make no difference.

no. SMB is short for server message block, its not like a packet type (like udp, tcp) it exists at a software layer next to these packet types

SMB was developed before samba, samba got its name from its abbreviation.
