Got this desktop with sound sound issues.

Fresh installation of windows 10 or 7 and no sound output. External speaker that ive used is known working.

When I play music, I see the sound bars moving etc but no audio output. It does recognises when I plug it in the headphone but no output. Board or driver issue?

Have you installed the Realtek audio driver ? I've seen a similar issue before just using the Windows drivers.
If i'm trying to decide between hardware and software I boot from a Linux live CD.

judging that the mobo is an asus board most probably the codec or amp is toast check if it heats up
