Yeah, and the arcing then damaged the PCB beyond repair. It's like if your car blows a balljoint and as a result hits a tree. Sure, the balljoint was the culprit, but the resultant hitting of the tree is what actually totaled the car. Fixing the busted balljoint is besides the point.

replacement mainboards run around $60... So if I really cared I'd just buy a fresh mainboard and be done. But honestly, given the condition of things I'm thinking of looking around for something in better shape to toss the parts in. Something that I can get decent batteries for without having to go to the trouble of a repack.
edit- Shoot, I can get things like convertable touchscreen Fujitsu lifebooks of the same generation (only with DDR3, penryn was a transition generation) for $70 or so... so really, I have options. I have other projects going on, so this will have to wait (time and to a lesser degree money), but I don't see a huge reason to bend over backwards with a PITA "fix" that I kinda doubt would work.
